Default 5th gear

I was doing a few spirited runs a few weeks ago across the California desert and could not get my car to go into 5th gear. I finally had to go directly into 6th gear and downshift into 5th.

Now that I think about it I have also had trouble getting the car to go into reverse.

Any ideas?

If I am correct that means the reverse solenoid has failed

This happened to me in my old C6 Z. I thought it was the reverse lockout solenoid but turned out to be a damaged syncro.

For me it was the solenoid, but on a C6Z06 T56 trans.

Syncros sound like they're going out. My reverse occasionally does that.

check the shifter-linkage first (external to the transmission)

shift into 3rd first and then into reverse. If it then goes into reverse like butter - could be syncro's. My tremecs did this - unsure if the same would apply to the vette.

5th gear is unsynchronized. I would change the transmission fluid. You could have a lot of crud floating around in there from your other synchros that is causing the issue. I've had great success with the royal purple atf fluid.

Thanks for your input. It will be at the dealer next Wednesday and will have all fluids changed.
