Default Can someone chime in on oil consumption...?

...i've owned my 2015 A8 Z06 19 months - 27,000 miles - varied use of backroads and highway...a good mix of both

- no burnouts - no 1/4 mile runs - no throttle to the floor stunts - i use the tach though, with mostly smooth "light footed progression" to redline often enough to be having fun...at my driving skill level for a car like this, thats about the only way i can enjoy it.....and i do love it

- early on, after the 5000 mile mark i noticed some oil usage, and now its about half quart for about 150 miles -- it was just serviced and they report "all is well"..but did not do a compression test, nor look at the plugs (which kind of baffles me since im talking/told them about oil consumption) - the mechanic (the only one they let work on it) since new is a motor guy 100%....has long history of car ownership (muscle cars) and has been working on cars for 20+yrs - his comment is...the Z06 motor is a hot motor....it will use oil.....leave it alone....keep buying oil

any input.....?

Yes, will use oil, but that seems to be a big excessive. Are you measuring it or are they? Trust but verify.

its me...i "follow the rules" (7 minutes after shut down) and see it myself....if using oil is "the norm" then throttle input must be the culprit....and i do like engine braking for what its worth

You have issues mine stays put and doesn't need added oil between 5k
changes.

What was the oil consumption earlier? 150 miles per quart is heavy useage IMO. If that car was mine, I would change the oil to a non synthetic, run the car aggressively for 500 miles , full throttle pulls to redline etc. to see if you can get a better ring seal. If your oil consumption improves, keep it up till 1000 miles. Go back to synthetic oil after it improves.

My car uses about a quarter quart every 1000 miles. I drive the **** out of it from time to time. Makes 700+ wheel and runs fine. Oil consumption is normal man. The car would run terrible if you had a compression issue. You don't have "issues".

The OP is doing 300 miles to a quart, that is excessive for a car that is driven easy. I agree the harder you drive , the more oil you can burn. I think the car needs to be pushed with a non synthetic oil just to see if its a ring seal issue, doesn't cost anything to do a little R&D.
Not to long ago I was a chevy dealer service Mgr. If I ran across a oil consumption issue, a lot of times it was a older persons car that didn't drive it hard enough usually before that car had 5000 to 10000 miles. Poor break in.

That is what the service tech said

I would have to say poor break in.

I would also have to say this is not turbo'd and shouldnt be burning that much oil. I would say about 1 quart per 1000 miles would be considered okay.

If you are running around in the lower gears with the rpms up high at light load (not full throttle) you are buzzing the engine and that will cause increased oil consumption.

That was a very long time ago. Corvettes have been coming with synthetic oil as the factory fill since the 97 model year with no problems due to the oil selection for break in. 20 years as of the 2017s.

My initial 7M, Stingray oil change at 2300 miles with NO oil used. Mobil1 was replaced with 5w-30 Pennzoil Ultra (Dexos approved) thinking it was higher quality oil (better NOACK numbers) Now, 1000 miles later almost 1/2 qt. low. I observed good break-in procedures. Does oil useage stabilize with time/mileage? Or, as some suggested replace the oil with Dino (non-synthetic oil) or....? Am I unduly concerned? Comments appreciated.

I think you are overly concerned. First thing to do is make sure you are checking the oil level the same way each time. I take it you have a wet sump engine. I've had my Z06 for a year, put at least 1500 track miles on it during the year and have 5800 miles on the car now. Haven't had any oil usage on track which is unusual in my experience. After one track event the oil level dropped a half quart while driving on the street but I topped it off at a 1/4 quart over full (1/2 quart recommended by GM) before the next track event and it never noticeably consumed oil again. I did have 15W50 oil in it from late March through the beginning of November. All Mobil 1. I don't think Pennzoil is any better or worse I just prefer Mobil 1.

...mine uses oil like gas - every drive requires a top off.....i do nothing crazy, i just enjoy the tach all the way....but no throttle stabs, or nothing too the floor....i like engine breaking too....but i honestly feel its obnoxious the way it drinks oil...dealer says they'll start a case on it, but never do - never checked plugs....exhaust tips get dirty/carbon build up like i see most do after driving, and must be wiped clean - thats all i got to say

At 4100 miles and spirited driving with 6 to 6500 rpm shifts , a lot of engine braking, no oil consumption at all from day one.

If you have not already I would document miles driven, level at each check and type of driving. Call GM directly and deal with the customer service through them. Dealerships do not like to diagnose issues when no codes are coming up.
Soot on the exhaust tips is normal and not a product of oil consumption.

Just to cover you bases, check for visible leaks or puddles under the car, GM will ask.

Your oil consumption is excessive, having to add a quart every tank of gas is not normal.

Bypass the dealership, let us know if you get it resolved.

Thanks, Chris

My wet sump engine used about 1/2 quart the first 1,000 miles than virtually nothing. I think most of the oil consumption was before the first 500 miles.
