Default C5 vs C7 oil filters

I recently purchased a 2016 Z51 coupe. I am more than thrilled with the incredible improvement over my 02 C5. And there in my question lies.

I buy my filters in bulk from Wix for all my vehicles and both boats. In checking I find I have two oil filters left over from my C5, and my C7 requires a different part number.

Out of curiosity I checked the two part numbers and find the dimensions are identical, the difference being the C5 is a full flow filter, where as the C7 has a 12 lb. built in by-pass.

Which begs the question: why would GM engineers trade a fully filtered oil supply for one that is by-passing much of the oil past the oil filter?

The filter that came on the car is a PF64. The filter that came on the C5 I think was a PF48. I think both are bypass filters in that if the filter get clogged oil will continue to circulate. There are high performance versions of both filters, UPF64R and UPF48R. The UPF64R and UPF48R both cross to the Mobil 1 113 filter and they are built with thicker cans and better media.

Here is an old thread were a guy cut a bunch of the apart: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...vs-upf48r.html

Not correct. the C5 generation LS1 and LS6 engines never used 48 series filters. The correct series for those engines are 44 and 46 series. The mounting thread pitch was changed for the 48 series starting with the PF48 for the MY2006 LS7 Z06 introduction to prevent interchangeability. Reason being that GM deleted the pressure relief from the engine block moved it to the filter can. GM did not want anyone to be able to install a 44 or 46 series filter which has no internal pressure relief to the newer engines which were being built with no internal pressure relief in the blocks.

You can not use those on a C7.

Why do you think that?? The pressure relief is there to prevent the filter elements from collapse if the differential pressure is too high (cold oil starting during winter, dirty filter, etc.) It is a transient event over a short duration, not continuous. Pressure relief is always a design requirement. The only issue is whether the engine designer includes the pressure relief internal to the engine block or chooses to locate it in the filter. Bypassing may occur if necessary regardless of whether the filter has the internal pressure relief or not. An internal engine block pressure relief also protects the filter element.
