Default My first flat...

Well, not really a suprise as I've had a slow leak from my left rear tire for a couple of months. I'd notice it was down a few pounds over the course of a couple of weeks.

Took it to Power Chevrolet here in Newport. The guys were fast, put the car up on a lift and together we looked for a nail or leak around the rim.

No joy. They couldn't find anything so they suggested I take the car to Les Schwab as they have a dunk tank. Instead I took it to a locally owned place (Pacific Tire) here in town. The guy charged with taking off the wheel asked me for the lug key.... "What's that?" I asked in complete ignorance. The guy looked at me and said I needed it to take off a wheel...

I rummaged around and finally found it in the hideaway cubby in the trunk area. He got the wheel off and got it onto the machine, telling me they'd just purchased this tire machine to deal with wide and/or low profile tires.

Anyway, into the dunk tank the wheel went. Jeez, those tires are big and fat-I'd never seen one off the car before. Within a few seconds we saw a steady stream of bubbles. It was a small stainless steel screw that was completely worn off on the top. Looked like a grain of granite.

Out went the nail, on went a patch, and back on the machine to be remounted. An hour later, the car was all buttoned up and I was back on the road. $25.

BTW, this is the third flat I've gotten on a vehicle since moving here to Newport, OR. Prior to that, hadn't had one since I was 18.

Glad to hear it repairable, and wasn't too much of a problem.

Thanks. The tech was swearing up a storm under his breath about getting the tire up on the machine and popping it off, though. Huffing and puffing, he grumbled "They should make 20" wheels illegal on passenger cars."

I told him I'd call ahead when I ordered new tires to make sure he was on vacation when they came in.

Guess he'll be happy when the Carbon fiber rims come out, they'll be much lighter... i take it they did an inside patch and didn't try to sell you a new tire because runflats are "un-repairable" $25 bucks, what a great deal! yet to plug a C7 tire, but the best $14.95 i ever spent was on a plug kit, don't need runflats if you have one of these kits.

I picked up screws in both rear tires. I plugged them myself and they've been fine for 5,000+ miles.

Default greetings from another PNW neighbor

I have had six Vettes and have had one flat with every one of them (the worst was my '12 GS with those giant, fat, sticky GY runflats); had a flat on my current 2014 after one month of ownership...........

Welcome to the flat tire club! I think I'm a charter member. I'm glad you were able to have it remedied so easily.

BTW, everyone, even tire thieves, know that the rear cubby is where everyone hides their lug nut lock.

Welcome to the Flat Tire Club. I've had two this year on new MPSS - thank goodness for road hazard insurance.

I had a flat last late winter about 2 months after I had the car. It was a spike about a quarter inch round. I was out in the middle of nowhere. 67 miles from where I live. I called GM and they said they could have a repair vehicle out to me in 4 hours to tow the car to a dealership, which would be another 2 hours after they got there. I said no thanks and drove it on my run flats back home. Drove it to Discount tire the next day and just had them put new tires all around on it. I had 12,000 miles on the car and the fronts were in the yellow zone from my G force driving around corners. I wanted all season run flats from Michelin. I don't want to be stranded. A fill kit on that tire wouldn't have worked. Run flats for me.

Negative. Both tires were pretty new and had to be replaced.

FYI, another forum member told me that any puncture reduces the Z speed rating on that tire. I don't know how much....... but was surprised to hear it.

Felkebg,

It's not true of all manufacturers, but for Michelin, the speed rating is maintained with a proper repair. Runflats can be repaired once and non-runflats can be repaired up to 3 times and still maintain the speed rating.
