Default Idler pulley...what am I doing wrong?

This was on the car (63) when i got it, but was never hooked up.
Motor just went back in and i'm slowly putting everything it back together.
Here's the problem....

Top part of the idler is almost touching the upper pulley. There's maybe 3/8" of movement before it touches the pulley.
Am I missing something? I could just toss it in the trash

This is what it's supposed to look like. Are you saying the idler adjustment hits the SIDE of the water pump pulley?

Mike
it may be the angle, but it looks like it is/would hit the balancer.

I think he's talking about the slotted bracket---not the pulley itself.

Default Idler Pulley

I just looked in my AIM, and it looks like you have the lower mounting bolt in the wrong hole. It goes in the upper of the 2 holes on the face of the block. I can't tell from your picture, but it looks like yours is in the lower hole. The slot in the bracket should be at about a 45 degree angle---Yours is almost horizontal.

Wow, you guys are good...and I want to thank the forum for all the help so far, this poor car may see the roads again after a 35 year slumber.
Now I can only assume this idler pulley is not correct for the car??? If i put the lower bolt in the upper hole in the face of the block this i what i get.

Not even close. So back to the lower hole we go, i removed the stud out of the lower water pump hole and mocked it back up

When i removed the water pump stud I saw the washer i put on, it's about .085 thick. Seems that was the issue, no washer and the now the bracket slides nicely behind the pulley on the water pump. Problem solved I guess.... but now I'd love to figure what this Idler bracket is really from. I really wish the car would answer my questions when I talk to it

one more question....was the idler pulley only on the 340 and FI cars?

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought the idler pulley was also on the 64 & 65 L-76, 365 hp cars, non p/s and a/c.
