Default Please help... Problems Paint...

Hi everyone.

I've been a long time reader but this is my first post, so thank you for the past information and future help. I recently had my black Z06 detailed (it was not cheap) only to get it back and have it look worse... They did a great job but it brought out a million pinholes (?) in the paint.

My mechanic asked me if I crashed the car and had it repainted, he thought it was solvent popping from a bad paint job, but that's not possible... The car has been in the family since it was new (10 years and 2 days ago) and its been babied since, definitely never damaged or repainted, only 33k original miles...

I think it's the result of being used as an LA to Vegas car and is a result of sandblasting, etc. It is only on the leading surfaces of the car, hood and a handfull on the rear flares. I dont see it on the sides or behind the flares... What do you guys think and do you think anything can be done shy of paint?

(this is after the most expensive detail shop in town gave it a shot...)

This picture is to show the lack of the pinholes on the side. I'll try to get daylight pictures tomorrow, weather permitting:

If you're anything more than 3 feet away, it looks great...

My guess is that it will require a repaint to fix that.

The clear coat/paint on most modern cars isn't really thick enough to correct blemishes like that without burning through. Our black 2010 Mountaineer that we bought new has leading edges just like that

Just call someone that does paint correction, not detailing...PAINT CORRECTION. Had a case of terrible terrible paint glare and swirls all over the car when a body shop guy decided to give my Vette to a new guy on the job with a wax detailer machine...messed the whole thing up!Paint correction it is not cheap it can cost a couple of hundreds yet is better than painting the whole car so don't worry there is hope.

I agree that "sand blasting" could be the issue here. That being said, the clear coat could be so severely pitted and damaged it is beyond repair. As others have suggested take it to a paint correction shop that has a paint depth gage (Not cheap equipment) and ask for an expert opinion on how damaged the clear coat is and if it can be fixed. A repaint will be very expensive if done right.

I guess what you want to do with your car is the real question.

Do you want to show this car or drive around and have everyone say " this is a good looking Vette"?

If you want to "show" the car, then there is no question, get it painted. If you want drive around and be proud, then buy a Dr. Colorchip system for your color.

For ~$50 you can get a kit that perfectly matches your paint, and spend a few hours fiddling and fixing, and get on with your life. It's 100% reversible with acetone, so if you don't like it, then get it painted. Heck, even the learning curve is not permanent.

(PPG certified painter) I hate to be the bearer of bad news. The only way to make it perfect again is a repaint. If you can feel the blemishes with your fingernail there is not enough clear coat left to cut and buff.

You can try the touch up method but up close you will always be able to tell.

Looks like it got sand blasted. If you get it repaired wait one month for the paint to cure 100% then put a protective film over it. Find a good quality body shop. Black is the hardest color to work with.

Thanks for the help everyone. It's not what I wanted to hear but I appreciate it... I guess I'll leave her as-is until its time to trade up to that C6 ZR1 someday that I always wanted... Seems like a good enough reason...

If you drive them they all will look like that. Black shows the little chips in the clear coat more than other colors. My AW has them but they are much harder to see. It is a DD with 177,000 miles and nobody but me notices them.

Could repaint but that paint will be softer than the OEM paint and will look worse in short order.

I say drive it and enjoy.
