Well after a long and sore all over weekend (not as young as I used to be) I got my heads off and sending them to Kohle. However, I found two lifters on the passenger side third cylinder. two of them had marks on the wheel and a mark on the lobe. When I use my fingernail I could barely feel anything definitely not a sharp edge, Just slightly rough. I'm going to go with Johnson 2110 lifters, but I just want to get everyone's thoughts, I'm 99% sure the cam lobe is good. Thanks

Out they come, no good.

Cam lobe is also scared and will scare the new lifters the same as the old ones. Yank it all and replace if you want to do it right.

Even when I use my finger nail I can't feel anything, you think it would effect the new Johnson lifter?

Sorry bud, its trashed. Its beyond use and will 100% for sure effect the new lifters and you will end up sooner then later going in and addressing it correctly.

Your fingernail is not a correct way to address this.

With 10k you need to do this right. To give you an ides how bad it is, and 44k mine all looked perfect as a new lifter.

When they get marks like yours it is from metal fatigue, and they degrade quickly from here, and I would state that the cam lobes are the cause of the marks on your lifters. Not the other way around.

That is very common. I've seen it dozens of times. A finger nail can be a great measuring stick. I would however swap lifters.

Once the hardened surface of the cam is degraded, the cam will be eaten alive until you no longer even have a lobe.

Don't waste your time putting it back together without a new cam.

I should have been clearer. I AM NOT suggesting that the cam be replaced. You need to rotate the cam and look at the leading edge of the nose on each lobe. I've seen the same tracking lines, many times. it is usually just mild scuffing that won't hurt anything. Almost like swirl marks in a clear coat. Just make sure you do not have scoring or gouging.

Your a more respected mechanic then I am, and in no way am I trying to get in a pissing match with you

I understood you. Mike look at the left side of the top of the lobe and tell if you see the part that looks to be going deeper then scuff marks. It looks like scoring/gouging.

I am as frugal as one gets, and would have no problem polishing the lobes on a high mile motor just to keep from throwing money at it. But OP said something important below

fingernail I could barely feel

"mild scuffing" shouldn't barely be felt ???

If polishing the lobes does not remove the marks, its replacement time IMHO

You may not be running your nail over the right area on the lobe.

So let me see if I get this right, the cam lobe you show above, is the lifter on the right correct?

The line on the top of the lobe on the left said, can you lightly run a small screwdriver over that and feel it ?

Tracking lines won't hurt anything the 2nd lifter doesn't look to be all that bad at all the first does look to be out of the ordinary though. If you can't feel anything then in reality it's probably ok however if you feel anything then I would replace the parts. I've seen tracking lines like that on many cams but this does seem to be a little extreme

IMO looking at the pic, that cam has more than just tracking lines.

Since you already have the cam out makes sense to me to go ahead and replace it, and not have to worry about it.

If we replaced components at every little wear marking, we'd spend more time tearing the motor down than driving the car (please don't look at your cam bearings).
