Default Painted Stinger stripe on 2017 Z06

Not sure anyone is interested but just in case here goes...

I refused to pay $500 for the factory carbon flash stinger sticker. I'm **** and just couldn't see having a sticker on the car.

As such, I had my painter paint a carbon flash hood stinger on the car. I think it looks great and so much better than a sticker. Better yet, my painter did it for $500, same price as the GM Sticker. After painting the stinger he cleared the entire hood so you don't have the "ridge line" that you can feel with your fingernail with a sticker.

Also, I don't like how the GM sticker deviates/angles from the natural hood line to meet the top of hood vent. GM does this as it would be hard to get a sticker to follow the hood line down and go completely around the hood vent following the hood line like I had mine painted.

Just throwing this out there for consideration.

Rick

Your the man, did the same thing to my last one, and will do it again for the 17', very nice, didn't like the finish from the decal myself, that made me remove it and paint it on.

painted.
Looks good but with todays hi tech vinyls I'll never paint again. To much can go wrong. I found some lint in the clear, they put a scratch in the window and pin stripe was less than perfect, redone.

Very nicely done! Did the same to my '15 Z07. In fact, I even found the Carbon Flash powder coating code and had Ben at Weapon X get Forgeline to make some custom wheels shot in that color.

Looks good, that's exactly the combo I ordered minus hood stripe as 500 was absurd. You can get the a better vinyl from vettestripes for like 130.

Also part of the reason I found the cheaper option is I spoke with the shop thats going to do xpel install and they say the xpel doesnt stick good over vinyl.

Redc7z06,

Looks good, however, for others looking your painted stinger demonstrates what I mention in my original post describing how the factory sticker angles down to the top corners of the hood vent. Yours is painted just like the OEM sticker as it deviates from the natural formed hood line terminating at the top corners of the hood vent. The "weird" angle the sticker and your paint takes to meet the corners of the vent don't look right to me.

I "personally" don't like this deviation and prefer painting so it goes all the way around the hood vent. Yours looks good. I'm just pointing out the difference.

Here's a pic of an OEM stinger sticker on a yellow car demonstrating what I'm trying to verbalize and how I did mine for comparative purposes:

I think your painted stinger that wraps around the front of the hood vent is the way to go! It looks much cleaner and I agree that for the same price of the OEM vinyl sticker, you can get a better result.

BTW, I think the above photo is of the exposed carbon fiber stinger hood insert and not the vinyl sticker, however they follow the same lines.

I agree with following the natural hood line, I actually attempted doing it with vinyl a few months back and failed, I have thought about painting it like yours but am a little concerned about resale. looks awesome thought!!

Isn't the one on the yellow car just fake carbon fiber weave printed on vinyl? Are you saying the factory actually cuts or manufactures a relief in the hood for an "insert"?

My understanding is the sticker is available in a multitude of colors (i.e., red, white carbon flash metallic, carbon fiber weave pattern, etc)?

Yep, they actually insert the exposed Carbon Fiber section into the hood as the rest of the non-exposed or painted carbon fiber hood, does not have the pretty weave pattern. The exposed carbon fiber weave hood insert is a $1995 option.

I agree I like the paint around the vent the only reason I didn't do it was because my car was already XPEL up to that area and it would have meant redoing the XPEL which I didn't want to do.

Thanks. You just taught me something. As you posted a response I was reading the detailed GM Corvette option book and saw that it's RPO Code B92 - Hood Insert, Exposed Carbon Fiber Weave and costs $1,995 as you state.

Hell, I thought I new all the nuances of the Z06 but shows what happens when I think. This is my second C7Z and I wasn't aware they offered an insert despite all the reading and research I do. I wouldn't have ordered the insert but I like being knowledgeable about the car.

Again, thanks for the education.

Rick
