Default NJ people, are stores still charging 7% sales tax?

I had my car washed last night, after I got home I noticed they were still charging 7% sales tax. Not a big deal, got charged $.03 more. Would be bigger deal if buying a new car. But over the year it will all add up and all that change will go in the owners pocket.

I wonder how this can be reported?

And it was a dumb *** idea to lower it by fractions, should have just drooped it to 6% then 5%.

The New Jersey state sales tax rate will decrease on January 1, 2017. The New Year will bring a new state sales and use tax rate to New Jersey. Beginning January 1, 2017, the New Jersey sales and use tax will decrease from 7% to 6.875%. The rate will drop further (to 6.625%) on January 1, 2018

According to the NJ Division of Taxation website, the rate did drop to 6.875% on Jan. 1. I checked the site the other day, because I hadn't received anything from the State and I wanted to be sure I was charging the right amount. When there have been changes to the tax code in the past, the State has sent out notices, but I've yet to receive anything notifying me of the change.

Maybe your car wash owner isn't aware that the rate changed. If the State hasn't sent out notices, and your not someone who pays attention to the news, how would you know that the rate has dropped?

6 and 5 percent? This State can't even afford to lower it the 6.875% that they did. I agree that the rate is a stupid number, and the change is so small that it will have absolutely no effect one most people's lives, but that 0.127% is going to cost the State a lot.

I figure that within a few months of Christie's departure, the rate will be back up.

The state will be able to afford it once Christie leaves office an no longer has a meal allowance. NJ is the most taxed state when you look at property tax, sales tax, income tax, gas tax, toll roads, etc.

As a business owner I did forget to change the rate for the first couple days. We received no formal notice from the state to make the change. I'm sure lots of places are still using the 7%. It's a ridiculous change anyway. Lets use a multiplier that goes into three digits so everything has to be rounded. Genius!

I don't think you are supposed to round up, so just use the first two decimal numbers .##

The first time I heard of this was from this post. I bet I would have had a ton of notifications sent if it was being raised!

Did you just move to NJ?
This is nothing new and not exclusive to Christie
