G3 Carbon is closing its doors.
Good evening Corvette family,
As some of you know, my business partner has been managing our operations while I’ve been away on a brief, albeit MUCH needed, vacation in the Indochina region since last week, and I've had very little connectivity. So, it goes without saying that each and every time I have been able to get into an area with Wi-Fi, I’ve immediately plugged back into the machine in order to make sure everything continued to flow smoothly.
I’m sure you can all imagine my shock and horror to have plugged in over the last few days only to have been informed by some of our best clients that G3 Carbon has been thoroughly and consistently letting you all down. Whether it’s been by way of erratic or inconsistent shipping time-tables, flatly shipping product to the wrong addresses, FedEx themselves doing wacky things with the actual deliveries, and a general disconnect between the realities of what we do and what my bottom line expectation is for performance (Josh P., Paul K., Hampton H., Mike I…. I hear you loud and clear.), it all ends today, all so we can be better tomorrow.
Simply put: I expect world-class production quality to be delivered on time in exactly the same way you do.
Period.
So, in light of these general shortcomings, I’m closing the doors.
Hold on, hold on, hold on… I know what you’re thinking, but hear me out.
I’m not interested in running a “me-too” business. I won’t manufacture outside the US simply for the sake of moving product and making money, and I CERTAINLY won’t continue to double-down on a system of production that’s out of alignment with my own personal core-values.
I’m not interested in being one of the many carbon companies that have come and gone, all because they simply couldn’t put their clients first (I always do), couldn't restructure when it was necessary (we are), and burned brightly before they faded out into obscurity. (Not on MY watch, folks…)
Why?
Because the business isn’t only what I do for a living.
As an enthusiast first, as an entrepreneur willing to take some risks in order to achieve our goals, and as someone deeply passionate about what we do here: this business IS me.
So, effective immediately,G3 Carbon is closed for what I feel is a VERY necessary restructuring.
As such, I’m taking the following steps to bring our efforts back up to the standards to which I demand we be held.
First: I’ve terminated my staff, effective today, with the exception of a single, talented technician.
If they can’t do their jobs, they can’t work for me or for you: simple as that.
The remaining technician has been charged with completing any lingering orders still in the system. (It’s not many. I believe we have perhaps 5 or 6 outstanding orders that will be completed within the next two weeks.)
Second: We’re looking into transitioning from an on demand system (you order, we manufacture) to an in-stock model (yes, I’ve got 10 available and can ship today) for Q2 2017.
This will reduce our lead times to 1 to 3 days as opposed to an absurd 8 to 12 weeks,as I've come to understand is happening in some cases.
Third: I’m investing in automation.
I’ve taken the steps necessary to reallocate some personal capital and will be investing in the equipment required to achieve long-run production capability. I’ve got meetings with equipment manufacturing vendors set up for the week following my return and I expect to invest approximately $250,000 in equipment designed to manufacture precision components within a significantly shortened production cycle. (CNC machines for mold development, 3D scanners for product development, a larger curing oven for rapid carbon fiber production, a large scale injection molding system for painted composite components, etc…)
Once we have the equipment on hand and our new processes are installed/tested, we’ll get our new manufacturing protocols put in place, ramp up inventory, and it’ll be at that time that I’ll hold a relaunch party to kick off the all-new G3 Carbon.
So, that’s that.
In between now and then, should anyone need me, I’m always available for discussions (save for the next week of me being out of the country, of course, since connectivity is still limited, at best) and if anyone needs anything, please don’t be shy about reaching out to me directly either via email (alan@g3carbon.com) or by phone (310-902-1050 is my personal cell).
I'll also continue to tease process and new developments on both Facebook (www.facebook.com/g3carbon) and Instagram (www.instagram.com/g3carbon), so be sure to follow us so you can keep your fingers on the pulse of our re-org.
So, thank you.
Thank you for your continued trust and faith in what we do here.
Thank you for your continued patience and support.
Thank you for 5 great years of growth, good times, and a resume built on our body of work that wouldn’t be possible without you.
…And I’ll continue to thank you every day, by making sure we tighten up our processes and get better/faster at what we do here.
Respectfully,

I haven't bought anything from your business but I just want to say that what you are doing is outstanding. I wish you the best of luck in your restructuring.

Thanks guys.
I realize it's often easy to separate a business from a person, but I feel like I've gotten to know most of the people with whom I've done business.
It's that personal relationship that make every delay, every miss-step, every hurtful comment from one of you (deliberate or not), and every single disappoint for which I'm ultimately responsible DEEPLY troubling to me.
It's crushing my soul and I can't let any of us live in a community in which I'm responsible for anything but happiness.
I'd rather not do it than to do it right.

Also, about the e-store: I'm going to maintain a very limited ability to produce while we restructure, but anyone looking for a project to be completed needs to know I'm doing the work personally as I manage the restructuring, training an entirely new staff, etc... and as a result, the lead times will continue to be long.
What I CAN do is be available for anyone who wants to get in line and take $1 deposits from here on out.
It'll secure your spot in the production queue and let me better organize our production efforts and needs as we make progress, and also minimize any feelings of discomfort while you wait.
Thoughts?

"In honor of jpee"
I'd say this is quite a testimonial to the company, the product, and the owner/OP. And I can also say, I am surprised in a good way. It is seldom when I've seen companies on CF have problems or issues that they ever get solved----in this case, that is still to be determined. But, even more rare is when many of the initial posters make positive comments and their good wishes for success.
That's a good sign, Alan. Take it as an affirmation and make your company better. Your customers will be watching for your return.

Hate I had to cancel my order and go a different route but couldn't keep waiting on the order and have the car out of commission. hopefully the restructure gets you where you need to be. Best of luck.

Go Canes!
Good luck with the restructuring. Good employees in South Florida are out there, but not easy to find.

As someone from the outside looking in, I have to say this is one of the most professional posts I've seen on this forum. It's clear you have your priorities straight and it sounds like you are a genuine enthusiast in the truest sense of the word. My most sincere best wishes to you and I hope you have tremendous success when you reopen your doors. Just based on what you posted, I will be looking at your products when they're available again. Good luck!

Good to see a vendor recognize when things aren't working as they should and take a proactive step in getting things back on track. Best of luck to you in the reorganization, retooling, and ultimately in reopening your doors for business.
