Default what kind new tires for replacment?

I have a 1996 CE LT4. The last set of tires I bought were Goodyear Eagles. They came with the car and I replaced them once. The car now has 77000 miles on it and I am due to replace them this spring. My question what should I replace them with, when I replaced my tires for my 1966 which I bought new a tried radios which were a great improvement. I am 82 now and I am sure out of the loop for tires. Thanks for any suggestions. Larry

What kind of weather do you drive the car in? If you need tires only for good weather driving I am very happy with the Nitto 555 G2 tires on my '92.

Larry, if your stock tire size is 255/45/17 front and 285/40/17 rear, you will have a limited selection in those sizes. You can step down to 245/45 and 275/40 and have a lot wider selection these days. You will only lose 10mm of width and about 0.5" in overall diameter, so no big deal. Like Jim says, tell how you use the car and we can be more specific. The basic choices for use will be "ultra high performance summer" vs "ultra high performance all-season." How big a factor is rain and/or light snow in your driving?

Ah, okay, didn't realize the CE came like that (I guess it came with the Z07 package). So that's even better, as there are loads of choices for that single size!

Thanks for all the info. I think my back tires are larger than my fronts. I am on my way home now from the south, and will get the true sizes from them. I just drive in the summer and do not do any hard driving any more, just a little track time at the Seattle's vintage car races during the half time around the track. Still like speed when I can, but am very careful, (ha). Take care and thanks. Larry

I tried kumho tires on the 86 coupe I had and while they looked nice they didn't have any traction compared to the goodyear tires I replaced them with. Spun out very easy all the time. I wouldn't run them again personally.

I have Yokohama advan sport all seasons. Durability is good so far, they grip really hard for not being very sticky. Also if u don't like how much summer tires cost (I didn't) these were like 800 for the set. My car is also a 96 base model with the 255/285 staggered stance

I went for a ride for the first time after replacing the 14 yo tires with new Nittos. I thought they felt great. They cost $530 shipped. I don't plan on tracking the car so for the cost I'd recommend them. 95 staggered fit also.
