Default Oil burning issues with '01 models?

The '01s seem to have the most issues with oil burning. What was different about this particular year model that may have caused this issue? What was done with the later models to correct it?

The only time my '01 used oil was crossing South Dakota. For that 350 miles we averaged 85 to 90 MPH with a 100 degrees outside temp. Other than that it doesn't use any oil between oil changes.

I had the same problem with my '00 6 speed coupe. One quart of oil every 1200 or so miles. Had the dealer repair under warranty.

The problem was with the rings and the cylinder bore on mainly manual tranny cars operated at higher RPMs.

Here's a document on the problem.

That doc seems to be about the LS6. My previous '01 LS1 (6spd) used about a qt every 2000 - 2500 miles under normal driving. Seems I heard that GM changed rings in the '01 but change again in '02 to stop the oil burning issue. My current '03 doesn't use any oil.

I've drove my 01 vert over 45k miles, it now has 62k on it. I autoXd it hard all year, changed the oil (Royal Purple) every 3000k miles and it's never used 1 quart of oil ever. It's an auto.

The official solution to the LS1 oil consumption issue was to replace 1 ring on 1 cylinder.

My (first month of 2001 production) C5 was right on the edge of what was considered excessive.

Dealers mechanic at the time was of thhe opinion that to tear down the engine to replace a single ring was likey more detrimental than putting in an extra quart between normal changes.

Only driving 10k miles /year, I was inclined to agree, so I never did GMs recommended repair.

Oil consumption eventually stopped, and no long term negative effects.
Still have the car...116k miles on it now.

My '02 base coupe had the Z06 coated skirt pistons in it (if that answers the last part of your question).

My 01 (built Oct 2000) uses maybe a quart every 3000 miles. 69,000 miles. I have owned it since new, oil and filter every 3000 miles, Mobil-1 5W-30.
