I have a 2011 GS with the non-option standard audio system. I am betting that my standard audio system is much like what you have in your Base Corvette.

The sound was not that much to write home about. Everything that I had read said that the so-so audio quality was not because of the stock head unit, but because of the poor quality of the amp and the speakers, and not having a sub in the rear.

So, I left in the OEM standard head unit, but replaced all the speakers and installed an aftermarket 5-channel amp. Since this amp was 5-channels output, it allowed me to use a dedicated single sub-woofer in the rear. This new setup gave excellent results.

Again, the poor quality of the C6 OEM audio system is not really caused by the standard OEM head unit .... however, because you already have a quality aftermarket head unit in the car, I think that is still a plus.

The 5-channel amp I purchased was an Arc Audio XDi805. There now may be newer models of this amp.

For the two door speakers, get a set of 2-way component speakers. These come with a set of 6 1/2" Mid woofers and 1" tweeters.

For the two rear speakers, get a set of 2-way coaxial speakers. These have a set of 5 1/4" mid woofers and 1/2" tweeters.

The sub I used was a JL Audio 8", however many folks use the 10" (it's up to you, but 8" is more than enough).

I purchased my audio components from 'Double D Mods' who is a sponsor here on the Corvette Forum. They really know the C6 Corvette audio system very well, and can get you the parts that will work best, and give you all the info you need to install the system ... very helpful.

Below is a photo of the amp I installed which is mounted behind the passenger's seat back, and a photo of the sub enclosure installed back in the right rear corner of the cargo area:

Good luck,

Best thing to do would be to call Dennis at Double D Mods. Let him know what your stereo goals are and the budget you're working with, and he will give you exactly what you need.

2-ways in the doors will sound clearer, but imo The imaging is way too low. It comes down to what you are looking for out of it. Mine should be done in a month or so if you want to listen to it. Keep in mind I have a few bucks (more than I want lol) into it.

You can't go wrong calling Dennis at DD. (I like the way the sub in the rear takes up very little room).

Here's a pic of the custom boxes Dennis fixed me up with for my vert; it fits perfectly and takes up relatively little room.

And to the OP ...

After reading my post, you may have noticed that I did not mention anything about the single speaker on top of the dash.

Disconnect it .... It serves no purpose other than to degrade the sound quality. And don't replace it with some kind of aftermarket speaker either.

Again, replace the speakers in the doors, the rear speakers, add a single sub woofer and get a good 5-channel amp ... Double D Mods is your best bet.

Are there any alternative mounting locations for the amp that would keep it fully hidden? I know at one point there was a small amp that some folks were putting in the stock bose amp location. Is there anything like this currently available?

your not going to get a decent 5 channel amp where the stock amp goes.
This is pretty much hidden for the most part with the seat in normal position.
