Default Concerning finding on AC Delco PF64 Oil Filters

I bought three AC Delco PF64 oil filters to have them ready for oil changes during track prep. Thinking back to the relatively recent thread where people discussed prefilling oil filters or not, I decided to look inside them.

I was shocked to find dribbles of sealant on the bottom of the filter interior. At first I thought it was from a weld, but scraping it with a metal pick revealed it was rubber gasket sealant. All three are going back. No way I'm putting this on my car.

Why not? Doesn't seem to be a problem to me.

Where does gasket material end up if it enters the oil gallery?

pay the extra for the R series. Well worth it

If you're really thorough, change out the factory Non Magnetic Drain Plugs for these.

I my C6 i always caught fuzz in my magnetic plugs (non factory either.)

GM performance parts series. "R" for race? Idk. But I know my best friend owns Tune Time Performance and he got it for me along with the mag plugs. He has seen a thing or two along the way (and owns a C7Z also)

The UPF 64R is not for corvettes. Check the part number, it's for a chevy VOLT. The internals are different

The U stands for Ultra & the R for Race. It is the same for any AC Delco filter. They have a little different filtration and higher burst strength

Yup, 2nd generation Volt.
It's a $4 oil filter so don't think you're getting any magical.

Based on the fewer, and smaller, inlet holes entering the filter I would be concerned about a lack of oil supply feeding the engine, especially at higher RPM's. The LT1/4 requires a whole lot more than the Volt's 1.5L does.

^ This.......

I guess the OP doesn't understand filtration. Where do you think those residual manufacturing particles end up? Filtered!

Probably a bad decision on the part of Delco/GM to use such similar part numbers. That sealant material is probably well adhered to the surface and will still be there when the filter is changed. Those "dribbles" are in the clean oil path and you could see if they come loose easily and remove them before installation.

Before installing a filter I turn it upside down and give it a light shot of shop air (no high pressure aimed right at any part of the filter, just a gentle blast) to get rid of any debris. I am more concerned by what may have fallen in when another customer opens the container and accidentally (or purposefully) drops debris in. I remember from my high school days when you would still see people smoking in stores and the person next to me was looking in a filter box as ashes from his cigarette cascaded into the open filter. It probably wouldn't hurt anything but that memory has stayed with me.

Now we're starting to see some common sense (NSC5) instead of knee-jerk paranoid delusions that the Clintonite members of the Obamanation have thrust upon society.

A little preventive maintenance goes a long way.

The sealant scraped off very easily and became loose debris in the clean path as you noted. This is why I'm concerned and will not use these filters. Spending the time removing debris from my brand new oil filters isn't on my agenda. Instead I'll buy the Mobil One filters which don't have this issue and avoid it completely. Figured I'd share with you guys in case those particles could cause issues and the information could be helpful. If you're not concerned, by all means use the filters. It really doesn't matter to me what you put on your own car.

Several studies/tests/observations of filter quality I have seen by professional organizations suggest other filter manufactures may be better like the Mobile 1 M1.

I normally use what affords me the cheapest route, that meets the oem specs.

Took a look inside some PF64's I just purchased and found a similar thing. However I tried to scrape it off and it wouldn't budge. I wasn't going to worry about it. If the oil can get it off, then it could just as easily take it off from where it's supposed to be, since that surface also sees the same pressure/temperature.
