Default Please Help Swapping from 05 to 06 differential

my 2005 6 speed differential exploded last night and I know the 05 had an issue with the weak differentials. I'm wanting to swap it to at least an 05 model. I'm wondering what all will have to be done to make the swap. Also is the 06/07 the only other years that will fit my 05 or will the 08-13 models work too? I heard something about an adapter plate that I would need to get to make the differential mate up to my trans. Can someone please help with any of this? Thanks

I've never done it but I've read most of the discussions over the last 12 years. I won't pretend to tell you "how" to do it, I'm just offering an option to maybe expand your search for a replacement. Others here who know more than I will chime in to actually help.

You can use a C5 diff instead of an '06+ C6. C5's are apparently much cheaper and possibly easier to find.

Take a look at this DIY while you wait for others:

Good luck.

Switching to a '06+ differential requires a different tailshaft for the transmission to accommodate the larger bolt pattern.

stanger383 has the brackets. I just pulled the diff out of my '05 and will be putting in a C5Z diff as soon as I get it back from being "gone through" using Norm's bracket.

OP I've been running a c5 diff for years and many passes with no problem. It's a good mod for an 05.

Stanger will set you up. Let us know how it goes.

For clarification, it is not the tail shaft that needs to be replaced, rather the tail shaft housing on the transmission needs to be replaced.

I bought an 06 diff and T-56 trans. I had the tail housing pulled from the 06 unit and installed on my 05 T-56. This avoided any problems with the differences in transmission sensors and wiring between 05 and 06.

However, my speed shop said they needed to call someone in, a specialist, that had some special tool to properly center the tail housing on the main trans case. I think that makes sense since you want the tailhousing concentric to the shaft to avoid wear and leaks.

I currently have an 09 rear diff for sale with 58000 miles on it. I bought it to do my 05 coupe but I bought an 06 rag instead so the diff is for sale.
