Default Is the air dam under the front bumper important?

Installed my splitter today and didn't reinstall the 3 rubber pieces yet. Do I need to reinstall them? The car finally isn't making any scraping noises in and out of the driveway because they are Catching concrete. They don't seem to serve any actual purpose. Or do they?

The air dam is for aero to improve fuel economy.

I took mine off right after I got my car over a year ago. I couldn't stand the scraping.

Probably make a real difference if you normally travel at 130+ mph!

Does serve as a good warning system when it does scrap. You know you have to slow down or take some other action to avoid possibly doing any damage to the underside.

Both are good points. I took mine off. Got tired of scraping everything under the sun. I don't run 130 regularly enough to really need the dams.

The Z51 doesn't have the middle piece at all, just the two pieces in front of the wheels. I traded my base 14 for a 16 Z51 and when I got home I thought the dealer may have left it off so I called. Turns out it is not installed on Z51s. I think he said it had something to do with helping to cool brakes at high speeds on the track. Traditionally front spoilers help to create downforce at high speeds. So I would suggest you won't miss it.

Correct, the center piece is removed on Z51's to aid in cooling. The early MY14 Z51's which were later sold by GM as demos had all 3 pieces installed at the factory.

I installed a Z06 Stage 1 splitter on my Z51 earlier this week and left the rubber air dams in place. They scrape my driveway apron and in my work parking lot, but that doesn't hurt anything. I occasionally wipe them with a little tire shine and they look good as new again.

Do any of you guys have the air dams from your 2014 Z51 you want to sell me? Talking specifically of the ones with the angle cuts on the inside edges. (2014 only)

Besides for Aero, What I was told with my mini ute was the 2 infront of the wheels is important if it rains. It channel the water to the side of the tire.

yes its important if you get her going - some of the new cf splitters are now molded with the "cover" - besides - next time you scrape - you know its bad don't see the reason NOT TO have it on...

GM has said the reason the center dam is not on the Z51 is for aerodynamic balance. The addition of the Z51 rear spoiler changed the balance and they removed the center front dam to balance the car.

I don't believe they ever said it was for cooling. I think that may have been the speculation on this and other forums prior to GM answering the question as to why it was omitted.

I have a 2015 Z51. I don't like the 90 degree angle on the air dams. There is a GM memo to the dealers on how to cut the air dams at a 45 degree angle. #PI1148. Google it. I did it. Easy. Looks good.
