Default Need advice about buying 1966 327 Carb

This carb would be perfect date-wise for my June '66 built car, but should I take a chance on it?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1966-Corvett...RYildz&vxp=mtr

Or are the brand new re-pops better?

Are there any reliable shops where you can buy a dated and properly rebuilt C2 carb?

There are, but there are a lot of restamped carbs out there. Look this over closely. Great price if its been rebuilt well. Ask the seller questions. Who did the rebuild? Metering block a restamp? Will he guarantee it for a year?, etc.

Are you restoring this car to it's original state or are you wanting a good, reliable driver? A used carb is always a crap shoot...even if it has been rebuilt. You have no idea what the quality of the rebuild or the actual carburetor is. As I stated in your other thread, the carburetor listed below is a NEW carburetor made by Holley...not a "repop"...and it's no more money than the used one you want to gamble on.

I'd like to restore the car as close as possible to original, BUT the one thing I don't want to compromise on is how it runs. A crappy running car ruins any car, IMHO.

If you send it to a carb rebuilder/restorer who does it correctly and is trustworthy then you have no problems buying a used carb. I have sent 4 different carbs in diffreant states of repair to one rebuilder and all have came back with no adjustments needed and ran great.

When a seller says NO RETURNS in the ad I'm done. They clearly don't stand behind their work.

Reese,

I don't recall (and too lazy to check), but does a 3rd week of May, 1966 match your car?

If so, this carb, plus the metering blocks and any spare parts off of your old cutoff carb pretty much assure you of a numbers matching carb.

If you get a usable carb for $550 (including your old carb parts) that's not bad. Considering that you have the intake and lots of the fiddly bits (oil fill tube, etc) you're a long way towards being there.

I would consider this carb plus a rebuild (with your old carb for a donor) by a real pro (several are recommended on this site) if the date matches, and you're almost guaranteed of of a sweet-running unit.

What Leif said in response #3!

While others may disagree -- I learned the hard way not to waste time & $$ screwing around with 50 year old, leaky, fragile & often warped Holley die cast bits & pieces. Leave them for the BG & top flight cars so they can get on/off the trailer. Nothing has run better on my '66 327 than a new 3367 (set up & tweaked by Lars prior to install).

Whether you choose a 3367 rebuilt original or a repro the potential for carb problems will always exist. (Why are new cars made with FI today?) I will only say that if there are a lot of components of your car that are not original why bother with a 50 year old very expensive carb?
I have both for mine. I had a problem with plugs fouling too soon and decided to try the repro a few years ago. It runs well with the original after a second rebuild. (I rebuilt it twice in the last 20 years or so) but I like the way it runs better with the new 3367.

Yes, the last 5 digits of my VIN are 23828 so the build date is in mid June.

I second that. He does use the black epoxy for a couple of small seals, but its a tiny deduction for a very functional carb rebuild. He saved my cars' original 3605 after others told me it couldnt be. The thing works like a clock now. Phil's a good dude too. He offers different finishes depending on what level of restoration you want. Quality work.
