Default M7 drivers: How often do you use active rev match?

Wondering if I'm the only one driving around always using ARM (in track exhaust mode no less) and sounding like a wannabe racer. But I do love it....

All the time, but I click it off to avoid high revs when coming to a stop.

Most of the time. And always when the trans is cold.

Why wouldn't you? It's better on the tranny to have the RPMs match when downshifting. It also doesn't upset the chassis.

I generally do not use it because you seem to lose some of the initial engine braking effect. I usually turn it on when I'm thinking of passing someone and know I will need a quick downshift.

I like the natural engine braking when I slow to make a turn so I only use rev match occasionally

Use it most of the time after spending some time with it at Ron Fellows.

I use it maybe 1/3 of the time - but find myself doing some of my own 'rev matching' out of habit when I have it turned off. I am accustomed to driving a big rig with a 10spd, non-synchronized manual transmission and do it on instinct.

Old habits die hard, eh?

So glad I got the M7 rather than the A8. Oh, as someone mentioned above, it does sound pretty cool when the exhaust is opened up (when in the "Sport" or "Track" mode).

That "braking effect" is wear and tear on your transmission and clutch. You should use your brakes to slow down because brake pads and rotors are cheap, but clutches and transmissions are not. ARM also minimizes wear and tear on the transmission and clutch.

Always. And it sounds the same if I turn it off because that just means I'm doing it manually.

Yeah, when you have accelerated in first gear, are coming to a stop, and push in the clutch (still in first gear), ARM gives you a big (sometimes embarrassing) blip. Not sure why -- it's not like I'm going to downshift....

Somebody told me this years ago, and it stuck.

Most of the time. I still like to sometimes do it the old fashioned way myself.

But it's such a cool feature.

FWIW, three are some tricks to using rev match. Can't as I often did in my C6 and other DDs (all standards since I was 17.) Must not move the shift lever into any other than the gear you want, as I did when coming to a stop. With the clutch depressed would put the lever into other gears ( spooled up the cluster gears.). That is specifically warned about. Even if in the neutral gate it assumes your planning to use a gear in that slot.

May not be your issue but mine does not rev up excessively when coming to a stop.

On my normal downshift in town, 5th to 3rd when making a turn, I get more engine braking, not less. Need to make the downshift before you're in the turn. Depending on my speed my need little braking.

I'm surprised how many people use this feature regularly. I really enjoy matching the revs myself. Something satisfying about doing it perfectly.

Btw, my wife and daughter have said multiple times when they're in the car, "I love your car", or "I love riding in your car", and I think every time has come right after a downshift blip. It is heavenly.

I do it too, I love sounding obnoxious when coming to a stop. I don't mean that sarcastically, I truly enjoy it, the rev makes me giggle.

I turn it on and I also have the exhaust always in sport mode, so you are not alone my friend!

I honestly prefer doing it myself. I have found that it is actually quicker for me to do it myself because I am revving the engine as I am selecting the gear instead of waiting for the car to catch up. I have tried it a couple of times and my downshifts seems to be jerkier than if I just do it myself.

I have never had an issue with an acceleration downshift. They always go smoothly whether or not the car has rev match. The issue is braking and downshifting where you need to heel/toe and Rev Match pretty much makes heel/toe a thing of the past. If I want engine braking I just take my foot off the gas and don't downshift the transmission.
