Default targa top squeak fix

This squeak was driving me NUTS and i finally figured out where it was coming from and how to fix it.

There are three places where it squeaks - the clamps that hold the top down, the clamps themselves, and the weatherstripping.

1) clamp that holds the top: grease the pins, clean the pin seating surfaces, and check pin torque for proper tightness.

2) drip some lube into the hinge of the rotating handles with the top upside down- this was the cause for my squeaks!! Work the oil into the handle. I used "superlube" oil that I had on hand due to my flashlight hobby...

3) some squeaks are from the weatherstripping. Silicone spray/towel will fix this.

I haven't noticed any issues with my 2006 when the targa in on the car, but when it is stored in the trunk and I'm putting around town, it squeaks and groans like it is suffering a slow and agonizing death.

^I know what you mean. I grease the hook thingies that the top locks onto in the trunk and that has helped me.

Thanks for the tip in (2), the handles may not squeak when operated without a load, but when loaded up they may.

The problem with the tops is there are so many different areas that can squeak and rattle there is no one single method to fix it. The video goes a long way to getting most of them!

I've looked at several threads about this issue and someone mentioned a GM conditioner liquid. I asked dealership and they researched it. Said they could special order it $87.00 an ounce. I didn't order it.

I addressed my creaky targa top using that video. Result: all creaks disappeared.

I used BMW Gummi Pflege on the weatherstripping, and Mercedes sunroof lube on the pins and latches, because I had those products already.

I used a good silicon based grease on all metal pieces that contact and can move/rub/make noise. No issues for 3 years now.
Additionally, silicon based grease can be safely used on all rubber trims w/out corrosion.

lubricated the connection points, tightened the bolts on the removable top, and then added a small O-ring to the pointed connection pins on the removable top.

only creaks on larger angles

the large angle creaks are due to the handle hinge. Lube the hinges and itll go away!
