CA BAR's official stance is that participation is voluntary, so never forget that if you're flagged down for one of these. Additionally, any data or findings that are collected do not affect a vehicle's smog status. These roadside stops are just data-collecting surveys.

So they don't or can't tow your car if you do not pass or fail their inspection? Curious for all the highly modified guys this sounds like it would be a disaster if they flagged you down.

They do these in alot in my area (San Diego), I would strongly disagree with the comments above of not worrying about it but that's just me.

While they are technically voluntary, a CHP can still cite you with a ref ticket if he or she suspects you have mods. Make sure you avoid going through them if you're modified.

slightly, I am more worried about the DiabloSport predator tune. It will not pass the computer test, I always have to download and upload the stock tune to pass - do they check for this ?

If that's all you have then you're fine dude. Refuse the voluntary smog checkpoints and be on your way. No CHP is going to check for a DiabloSport tuner.

Funny, I passed my smog check when I had a canned tune from my diablosport intune a couple years ago. You'll be fine either way.

Thanks, I will refuse since it is voluntary. I just had it smogged and the tech said that I needed to remove the predator tune to pass which I did and just reloaded after the test.
What I don't understand is why a custom dynotune would pass but my predator would not ?

If a tune simply optimizes fueling and timing without throwing any CEL's, I don't see how it would even be possible for a smog technician to detect it.
