need advice.Thanks
Hey forum members, just found car which im very interesting but, what can be possibly wrong with the transmission and how much would it cost?
This is what owner wrote in his post for sale:
Unfortunately the car has some problems. 1st the targa top makes a creaking sound when going over bumps. Second the 5th gear grinds. A local transmission shop said they'd have to take the transmission out and open it before they can diagnose it, therefore I do not know what exactly is wrong with it. I skip 5th gear to prevent further damage. All other gears function perfectly fine. Wheels have curb rashes and there are some flaws with the paint. They are rock chips on the front end and minor scratches around the car. The car is dirty and is due for an exterior/interior detail.

The price is not too low considering all the defects you described. It's priced with consideration than a trans rebuild with labor is going to run you a couple grand. Perhaps the synchro is bad, or the wrong fluid is in there.

If 5th is grinding its most likely the syncros, dropping the trans on these cars is pretty labor intensive so it will most likely not be cheap. By the description it sounds like the owner does not take very good care of the car and knows it, the price seems to reflect this. A similar year with similar miles in pristine condition would typically go for high $20ks to low $30ks. I would suggest going to look at the car if its close if you're really interested after that I would negotiation down as far as you can.

My advice is to "RUN" as fast as you can away from this car. Your looking at at least a few grand to fix the transmission. The top is a non issue, they all make noise and it is easily fixed with lube etc.
For the amount of money that you potentially spend to fix the transmission, you can find a 2008 for likely 26-28K with maybe a few more miles, but in good to very good condition, compared to this train wreck that you are looking at. The LS3 engine will get well over 150 K miles without any issues.
Good luck in whatever you decide.

The problem with the top is common i guess? but with transmisson idk, if there is any shops near nyc that can do it for 1.5-2.5k its worth bying that car. My question it is 100% that transmission has be rebuild or maybe just chnage fluid?

I would imagine it's certainly a bad synchro, and with miles that low it may have just been a defect. Doubt it's as simple as a fluid change or the owner would do it to make the sale. He may already have tried that as well.
If your budget is 24K, you will need to keep in mind sales tax, registration, insurance, and the 2K to fix that transmission. If you can work on it yourself, or know somebody who works for beer and pizza you may be in luck.

Sounds like you don't want to hear the advice we're giving. Trust me, you want a car that's been well looked after. My last project car/daily driver was in similar shape as the one you posted. It was NOTHING but headaches. Every time I removed a part to replace or upgrade, I found three more that were about to fail or had already. Bought a pristine example this time, low mileage and it was worth every penny. Plus, five owners?? That's a red flag to me. I'd never want to be the sixth owner of a performance vehicle. With that low mileage.. KEEP LOOKING!! These things were mass produced. NOT hard to come by.

Sounds like that car hasn't been cared for. I'd keep looking if it were me.

I would think $21 or $22k for that car max. Here is a similar one but different color just north of Philadelphia in Northampton PA if you want to take a little ride. Looks nice in the ad, super low miles. It says it's been listed for 2 months, so I would think he would be ready to accept a lower offer. I would shoot for $26k or $26.5 if you are interested. I don't know the cars history but it might be worth checking out.
