Is it really that bad?
I currently own a coupe and want to get a Z06 but I am scared to death of the whole cylinder head issues. Is the situation so bad that you wished you would have bought a GS?

That is, no the situation isnt "so bad" if you address the valves and "never wished" i bought a gs.
I wanted Z06 427. Period. Go for it!

Hmmm.. Buy a GS (heavier, slower, lower tech, hate the front fenders, poser factor) or spend $1500 to re-do the cylinder heads..
You can assume the answer..

Absolutely nothing to be scared of once you understand the situation. Address the issue, and enjoy the car. Every time I hit the start button and I hear the 427 LS7 roar to life...never once do I wish I had purchased a GS. Owned a C5Z, now a C6Z...we wont talk about the C7Z, and I'm looking forward to what the C8Z brings to the table. No offense intended to other owners...Anything but a Z (or a ZR) is a compromise in my book.

It's just a fact of life that the valve guides are a wear item on the LS7 engines. The scary thing is (and I hesitate to call it scary) is that in the 1% of the cases that they do end up being the cause of an engine failure, it can happen at any time - low miles, high miles, no mods, lots of mods. 99% of us out there will never have an issue, especially since these cars are usually toys and we don't put many miles on them. Just gotta use common sense: if you mod your car, you may experience more wear. So either get them checked properly or just have them R&R'd/refreshed for a minimal cost. Even then you should still check them every once in a while to make sure they're ok. I didn't lose any sleep over it when I bought the car. If you're not willing to spend the money to maintain the car, don't buy it.

GS does have some advantages. I would like the auto and removable roof. Making up the power is simple, but adding those to a vette is very costly. So it depends on what you want.

The possible valve issues haven't made me regret my decision to go Z06 one bit.
After having just bought 4 new tires I can say the head fix was only slightly more expensive. Could have been cheaper than the tires but I splurged on some extras.

It is all great 'til you drop a valve. Have y'all read the thread about the extended warranty fight?

Nope...never looked back. Had a 2005 coupe that I absolutely loved. Traded it for a 2006 Z06, took a beating on the deal, but drove away with a grin on my face. 6 months later, spent a few $$$ on heads, headers, cam, tune. Now, just can't seem to part with it, even though I hardly drive it. But when I do, its absolutely the most fun you can have with your clothes on. I promise.

Or buy one that has already had the heads addressed. Lots on the forum in that fashion (Including mine, shameless plug)
