Check Gas Cap

Check Gas Cap
The check gas cap light and check engine light came on a couple of weeks ago. I replaced the gas cap and cleared check engine light and system has worked great for a couple of weeks. Check gas cap light came on again today but this time without check engine light. Any idea's? 2005 C6 Convertible.

Did you 'repair' original cap and how? Or, was it replaced?
If replaced could be defective, a little silicon on seal may do the trick.
Or return for another & try your luck, again.
Code eliminates itself after a few cycles, providing there's a good seal.

Get rid of the factory gas cap and buy a Stant gas cap. I had problems with my factory gas cap setting the check engine light on my 2007 vert. Replaced it with a Stant and never had the problem again. You can buy them at any automotive store.

Resurrecting an old thread. 2005 C6, check gas cap message. Then the CEL. Replaced cap with a Stant. Still getting message. Someone posted to check fuses. Only emissions related fuse I can find is one of the large 4-prong in the fuse block under the hood, so no way of knowing it’s condition? Time to plug in the OBDII and see what codes I’m getting. Frustrating!

Pulled code P0455. ‘Emissions leak. Large leak’.
Now to figure out what and where. Anyone else get this code at some point? There isn’t a P0499, which is the solenoid. So grasping at straws on what to look for?

Welcome to my nightmare. P0455. This has been a persistent issue. My fuel pump failed so we pulled. the tanks. Changed all gaskets etc. New slant gas cap. About a week later the dreaded, "check gas cap" came back on. Large emissions leak. I have given up for now. But if anyone has an idea??????

Nobody? Was leaning towards replacing the two solenoid valves (engine bay and by the fuel tank), but those seem to give a P0499 code. Don't want to throw parts at it unnecessarily. As mentioned, installed a new (Stant) fuel cap. Wouldn't think it would be bad from the get-go? More likely, it would have stopped the 'check fuel cap' message for at least a short while, then tripped it back on again. In my case, the message (and CEL) has stayed on for the past two weeks. Gotta believe the cap is good. Also, I'm not smelling gas fumes (some folks have said that fumes are present).

I understand that a shop could perform a smoke test to find that leak, maybe do this before throwing money at the issue.

Ended up being the solenoid valve.

I recently had a problem with P0449, may or may not help you, but the thread is here.
Ended up being the solenoid valve.

And had another thought, not knowing quite how things work on the Corvette .... After replacing the fuel cap, I've been hitting the 'reset' button on the DIC to get rid of the 'check gas cap' message and of course, the message keeps coming back because of the P0455 code. But until last night, I had not hooked up an OBD II and pulled the code, and 'cleared' the code. Does hitting reset not clear the code, and possibly I was getting the message because it wasn't cleared? But now, with a new fuel cap and the code properly cleared, maybe...just maybe...I've solved the problem? Guess I'll find out with a 10 mile drive tonight.

Usually codes like that will clear themselves after a certain number of heat cycles if the problem does not repeat.

Mine started as a gas cap issue, but migrated to the purge valve solenoid, and I think the code was correct that lead me to the right fix.

As said, I only had the P0455. Cleared with the OBD II Monday night but haven't had a chance to drive it since. The gas cap message was coming on immediately upon start up. We'll see if the new cap and clearing codes did the trick? Or if it changes to a second code?

Used OBD II to clear the code, have new Stant fuel cap. Have driven four or five fairly lengthy (10+ mile) sessions and still getting a P0455 code. Pissed.
