Okaloosa/Walton counties in the panhandle have some of the highest rated schools in the state. Home prices are decent. Hurricanes and tropical storms can be an issue but then the whole state is subject to them.

Been a lot of threads here lately about this. All I can say is that if you family is of the brain dead Zombie Libitards persuasion, please stay where you are. Same goes for "Blue Hairs" that cannot drive too. We have enough of those here now. Your schools, food, "fill in the blank" is better where you are, so if you are one of those, please don't move here and then complain about this or that sucks.

He's messing with you. We're from the same county. I'm originally from southeast Florida. I left in 1981 when I joined the USAF. I ended up here in the panhandle for my last assignment and decided to stay. My wife and I both work on base and like the area. We've been here 13 years and this is the longest we've ever lived in one place. We don't have kids but all of our co-workers swear by the school district as being top notch.

If you hate cold weather and the freeeze=32 degrees stay below
I-4. Just look at all the semi-tropical foliage below I-4. Above
it looks like anywhere NE.

Seminole County is just to the east of Orange County...Orange County is Orlando...Seminole County has some lovely areas...you can find subdivisions from $99,00 to $1,000,000 for new homes...it is the home of two colleges, the University of Central Florida and Seminole State College...I-4 runs through it on the north end...
To me, the further east you go the better it gets...I live in Volusia County which borders Seminole to the east with the St. Johns river as the boundry...

We usually stay in Davenport and Celebration is really close as well. They are just a little south west of DW. The schools in Celebration are top notch. That is where we hope to retire to. The whole state has many areas that have lots of car people and activities going on. It's a real car guys paradise. I was at a speed shop down there a few months back and we were all talking about what went on on what night and you can usually find at least one thing going on every night. Old Towne is right there too. They have big cruise nights on fri and sat every weekend and extra special events throughout the year. Orlando Speedworld is just east of Orlando not too far away if you like to race. And of course you have more tracks south of there, but I wouldn't want to be too close to Miami as it gets a little rough down there with gangs and the like. And West Palm Beach is great if you can afford it. You can actually smell money if you roll your car windows down while there. Lots of exotics there too. JMHO

Having grown up in New York state, spending a year in Daytona Beach (and traveling everywhere from Tampa, Orlando, etc), and then moving to Charlotte... I would never raise my kids in the south, sorry! Seems like they're at a huge disadvantage
edit: to add further, I'm in my mid 20s, spent last year in Florida, and there was a clear difference between those educated purely in the south vs common knowledge taught in NY. I'd wait until he graduated honestly :/
