Default South Carolina car tagging question

So I'm about to move to Myrtle and thinking about a new car.

Did I read correctly that the most sales tax you pay on a used car is up to $300?

In Florida, we have to pay regular sales tax rate on the entire purchase price.

I know my truck I bought in 2013 (new ram) I have not paid less than 300. It started out at 356 I think and is around 32x right now. But as the used cars go. My Camaro was super cheap like 50 or so dollars for a year

I used to live in myrtle beach and was just there yesterday transferring my c5z in my name.

Sorry I was referring to a purchase, not annual tagging. Poorly worded by me.

That link calls it casual sales tax, just trying to understand as its way different than FL

Yes, the sales tax maxes out at $300. The catch is that you have to pay a "vehicle property tax" (based on the assessed value) BEFORE you go to the DMV (found that out the hard way). Since you're in Horry County, here's the link: http://www.horrycounty.org/Departments/Treasurer.aspx.

When you transfer into SC you will also have to pay the county property tax in the county you will be living in.

Are you buying from a dealer or a private person?

Not sure yet...still shopping.

Is there anyway online to calculate what the tax will be?

A friend of mine paid 1000 dollars in property tax on a 2013 427 vert and that's on a two year old car. The sales tax 300 dollar sales tax cap is good but the yearly property tax fee will break the bank. Do your home work before you make your purchase.

Yes you pay the property tax on top of the sales max, and the property tax is where some SC counties nail you.

When I bought a 10 year old Porsche the property tax was over $600.

BTW the $300.00 max sales tax in SC is for both new and used cars. I worked at a dealer for 5 years and that was the one thing that all SC dealers were trying to protect. They almost all could never agree on one thing other than that.
