Default 2003 Automatic Trans Leak - Need Good Shop Recommendations...

I backed my 2003 Auto (47K miles) out of the garage this morning and noticed a small puddle of ATF on the floor. (~6" x ~18") The car has been sitting since Friday and the leak is new because it's always been clean under the car.

I crawled under the car and saw that the front of the transmission, was wet and that the bottom of the oil pan was stained brownish, like fluid had leaked on it and either dried or had road grit caked in it. The passenger side exhaust pipe in front of the cat-back joint also has a discolored section.

So, I have three questions:

1) Could this a front seal leak or a transmission pan gasket leak?

2) How prone are the front seal leaks?

3) I'm located in South Orange County. Can anyone recommend a good, honest transmission shop that I can use?

4) How much can I expect this to cost? (pan gasket vs. front seal replacement)

Thanks,

Dan

Personally, I would recommend "The Toy Shop" in Pomona. All they work on are GM trannies and rear ends.

It's literally a hole in the wall, but his work is outstanding.

When I had my '71 RS Camaro drivetrain completely redone, Mike the owner, converted my TH-350 to a 700R4 and rebuilt my 10 bolt rear end with a posi.

They have been around for a long time.......

I definitely would call them first and get their opinion.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I talked to the new shop where my daughter's boyfriend works.

They said that if I brought it into them, they would just send it out to the transmission shop that they use for this kind of work and that I should just take it to them directly, which I did.

The shop is Transmission Masters, located in Santa Ana, CA.

I talked to Ron. He put the car on the hoist and did an inspection. He found that it was just a leaking pan gasket. They replaced the gasket and fluid and had it done the same day, charging $125.

They have two-post lifts with low arms that are capable of easily getting under the car. I made sure to install my pucks at the shop so there wouldn't be any issues with body damage.

They've got a bunch of good reviews on Yelp, which made me feel better about using them. I would recommend them to anyone.
