Default Smog test question

Hypothetical question:
If someone had a Z06 with a cam (LSA 110*) that would never pass a sniffer test, I would think there is nothing a smog shop could do to get it to pass even with the extra ("I can pass it") fee. Is that a correct assumption?

In this hypothetical situation, would there be any other options? A couple hundred to a fellow ZO6 owner to have your VIN# programmed into their vette?

Just courious

This was the best way you could think of to ask these questions?? Good luck with getting the "help" you need.

You can avoid bi-annual emissions testing by purchasing a cabin in the desert or some other area not subject to bi-annual smog checks and then registering your car there. This could cost you $100k, but it is a solution.

I don't think the state really cares if you have a dirty tailpipe- just so long as you pass visual and a cam ain't visual. You didn't say if you had headers, but it sounds like you have headers.

Year 2000 and up cars are not subject to sniffer test anymore. Just OBDII port reading. Smogged my 01Z 2 weeks ago.

Does the OBDII port reading give basically the same readings as a sniffer test? Or, does the OBDII just look for engine light codes?

BTW, thanks to my vette brothers that have chimed in.

Not all stations are set up with the new system. Just smogged the wifes 08 Saturn. They plugged into the port and no sniff. From the plug in I believe they are looking to make sure enough tests are completed and for fault codes. They will also do a visual. No tailpipe readings at all.

talk to your tuner. It isn't running that cam with stock tune. I expect it is already fixed.

It is the headers that are the problem in California. That they can see.

Bud has a Viper with headers. But in that car they run under the inner fender so no problem.

Not with that overlap, if the cam was closer to stock in overlap and not too wylde, then MAYBE...

I have seen it happen...

But as mentioned above, 2000 and up no longer get the sniffer up the tail pipe, as long as the ecu say's your good to go..

Not all smog places have made the change so you would have to seek out a shop with the new Equipment.

Also there is a part that says 9X to 2000 vehicles will keep the sniffer for now as well as a few select vehicle make's like Toyota's will keep the sniff test.

Yes buy it's PRE OBD 2 only, so 96 and back get the cap test.

Correction Cap test on all vehicle's, pre OBD2 gets the nitrogen pressurizing of the system.
