Two dead in Corvette crash on Bouquet Canyon Road
A fiery crash on Bouquet Canyon Road left two dead Saturday morning, according to officials with the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at around 10:50 a.m. a little ways past the Big Oaks Lodge when the driver of a newer-model Corvette came around a curve and apparently lost control of the car.
The vehicle was apparently traveling northbound on Bouquet at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash, said CHP Officer Eric Stevenson.
The Corvette swerved, leaving dark skid marks on the roadway, and rammed into a tree before catching fire.
“The driver looks like he died on impact,” Stevenson said.
Passersby were able to pull the passenger out of the vehicle, but neither they nor paramedics were able to resuscitate the victim, Stevenson said.
“At the moment we’re not sure what caused the collision,” Stevenson said. “It appears to be speed-involved.”
The crash and fire virtually destroyed the Corvette, leaving only parts of the vehicle’s transmission and engine “and a couple of tires,” Stevenson said.
“Everything else melted,” he said.
There were reports of a “Corvette club” driving up Bouquet, and it’s believed the driver may have been a member of that club, according to Stevenson. That is still under investigation, he added.
The crash shut down a stretch of Bouquet Canyon Road for hours, and many motorists were forced to turn around when they reached the crash site.
Bouquet Canyon Road is a popular spot for motorists and motorcyclists — some of whom tend to drive too fast on the winding route.
“Especially on the weekends when the weather gets warmer, we get the guys in the hot rods who want to come up here and run the canyons, we also have the motorcycles that run the canyons at high rates of speed,” Stevenson said. “It’s been an ongoing problem for years.”

Melting Slicks
As I understand it, the passenger was indeed Ray.
Some knew him as "C6 Ray".
Ray was one of the founding members of the Valley GTG and a very talented driver.
Ray suffered a stroke a year ago and was unable to drive anything but a wheelchair, he was a frequent passenger as he continued to enjoy the Corvette hobby he loved so much.
Rest In Peace.
