Default Potentially moving to SoCal...wondering if my modded car is legal?

Hi all,

So, I've got a job interview coming up with a media company in your gorgeous area in the coming week.
If I land the gig, I'm moving from the east coast...and out of all this snow, thank goodness!!!

I'm on the fence on selling my built/tuned C6...I'm not sure if it would be CA legal.

It's a h/c/i C6 with full bolt-ons. Nothing really stock about it, except I kept the NPP exhaust. O2's, MAF, and EVAP are tuned out. Gives a MAF code on scan, but not on DIC.
Passes the TN scan, but they allow one code to still pass.

What say you? Thanks for any and all info!

Aftermarket headers typically fail the visual portion of the smog test.

I'm pretty sure this is an automatic fail.

This is definitely an automatic fail. They'll plug into the OBD-II port, and ANY active code will fail you - even a common one like the loose gas cap code.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

You could probably pass by taking the following steps:
- swapping on a CARB-approved CAI
- swapping on oem LS7 exhaust manifolds and midpipe
- retuning with all oem sensors functioning properly (this may or may not be reasonable, depending on how radical your cam grind is)
- if your intake manifold is one of those gray FAST guys with the red lettering, grind down the letters and paint the whole thing flat black, so it looks stock

It's okay...It's SD tuned, so I could probably have all the sensors tuned back in...but I'm not putting any more work or $$$ into this car. I'll keep researching to make sure of the specifics, but if I get the job, I'll probably just quick-sell and have one less thing to drag across the country.

Doubt it'll be legal. All monitors need to be armed to pass smog. You could always get a "smog" if you catch my drift. Cali is a really bad state for modded cars. Heck I believe there is a law that says you can't change the OE exhaust system unless you were in an accident where the OE system was damaged. And even then, it has to be under a certain decibel and carb legal.

Any exhaust mods that occur after the cats and don't affect O2 sensors or any other emissions system will pass smog, period. Aftermarket mufflers or resonators don't need a CARB approval number. Hell, you can run straight pipes after the cats and still pass.

Noise violations are a separate issue. I know a lot of guys with loud exhausts, none of whom have ever been ticketed. I think you need to be acting pretty stupid to get one, e.g. cruising through a small town at 5,000 rpm.

In California, you must have no codes and all systems operational.

Based on what you posted, it will certainly fail and you will not be able to register it in California.

Headers are custom, has cats in stock locations, and all O2 sensors are there...just tuned out because it used to be a blower car. Simply adjusted the SD tune instead of doing a complete re-tune. I'm waiting to hear back from my tuner about redoing it with a fresh MAF tune which would get rid of any codes. Still have the stock NPP mufflers, on a switch, so not worried about noise.
It's passed in 4 states so far...but Cali would be the toughest.

And I own EFI Live...easy to swap a smog if need be. I have a daily, so it'd just need to be legal enough to get to the track and back home. Perhaps enjoy some of those lovely canyons I hear so much about.

Thanks everybody for the info, advice...and warnings. Hope to meet some of you guys and girls one of these sunny days.

You'll need a trailer to make that happen!

I wouldn't but for a potentially high paying dream job. LOL!

And thanks for all the advice...after some research, chatting with a few tuners and other people in the know, I'm all good.

If I could convince my wife to leave, I'd be packing right now. This place is paradise lost. Liberal agenda, taxes, cost of living on everything, inflated cost, traffic congestion, crime. You name it. Two things going for it; weather, and car culture.

Or you could register the car in a part of town that doesn't require a smog...

When moving into CA from out of state, I believe everyone has to do an initial smog, even if you register in a zip code that doesn't require the subsequent biannual testing.

Take as many people with you as you can convince. It will mean less traffic for those of us who stay.

Make? Don't look now, but.............

No POLS consider cost/benefit; just the 'benefit'.
