Default Laguna track time and the Grapevine closed on New Years eve.

We had a great GT car experience to end 2016.
Where you drive several hundred miles to track your Vettes and then survive the winter weather and traffic on the way home.
These old Vettes sure are tough cars.

Laguna was fun as always.
It was relaxing to be there with no spectators and only 15 cars in our run group.
Les and I flogged our stock C5Z vettes for 4 or 5 laps until the oil temps got around 250 then cooled them off for a lap before attacking the track for another couple of laps.
Here is a video of Sandy's new GT350, sounds good with the flat plane crank too.

The drive home added to the GT experience.
At the 101 south and 46 the grapevine was reported open but the weather was cold with snow above 6k feet.
After we got on the 5 south near Buttonwillow the electronic freeways signs warned the 5 was closed 30 miles ahead.
So we took a detour....We went to Taft and had some great Mexican food.
Then got on Hwy 33 to Ventura.
Hwy 33 was still open with dense fog, ice and snow and 4 times large rocks blocking the road.
What a relief to make it to the 101!
Les said if his wife would of been with him on Hwy 33 she would of considered it grounds for divorce. lol

Since the grapevine was closed the 101 and 405 were moving well.
It was dry and we got thru LA quickly.
In Orange County we narrowly missed a 10 foot ladder blocking our lane.
In San Clemente the rain was heavy and so was the New Years traffic heading to San Diego.
Just a long wet slog home in the rain with crazy drivers blinking brake lights.

As it was they said the grapevine was going to open at 5pm, it did but for only 45 minutes.
Les and I dodged some bullets and thanks to our cell phones and Garmin were able to navigate around the road and weather issues.
With our 2 hour Hwy33 detour we were home in San Diego by 6pm.

If Hwy 33 had been closed we could of taken Hwy58 to Santa Maria but that would of added a few more hours to the drive.
Although less chance for weather issues on the 58.
I did read Hwy58 was jammed with drivers trying to avoid the grapevine.

Our "smart" track buddies that spent NY in Monterey drove home 101 south the next day with clear skies.

Lesson even in good weather too many cars on the road NY eve/afternoon!

Anyone else have a grapevine story???
