----Texas guys with window tint----
How dark is it, have you ever gotten pulled over for it being too dark, and have you had any problem passing inspection because of the tint??
I want to go 5% on the rear and 20% doors, all comments please!!
Thanks -- Stephen

That is exactly what I have. I believe that is what is legal. Its a nice compromise. Sometimes, I wish I had 5% all the way around, but at other times I think that would be too dark.

Re: ----Texas guys with window tint---- (ZF Six)
When I had mine done in Oct of last year they told me I couldn't do more than 35% on doors, 20% on rear and nothing on windshield. Is DFW different than the rest of Texas or did they change the laws recently? Because I would love to have 20% all the way around.

I've got 5% all the way around, and an eye brow on my windshield...no probs with the police. I've had limo tint (5%) on all my vehicles for the past 10yrs and have never been pulled over for it. I'm 90% sure that 35% is max tint on the sides and 20% in the rear. I just make sure that whenever I get stopped, I roll down all the windows and have the interior light on with hands on the steering wheel. :yesnod: They never say a word about the tint.

20% is still legal for inspection, but you can get a ticket for anything under 35% on the front windows. You can go as dark as you want on the rear. I have not been ticketed yet for the 20% I have on front windows :yesnod:

I have 20 all around too and no problems being pulled over or inspection, although I was told it is illegal to have it this dark in front and the tinting shop would only do it without giving a receipt so they weren't held responsible.

35% on the sides and anything on the back is legal. I've got 35% on the sides and 5% on the back. At night, I can hardly see anything out the back window.

20 percent is the legal limit for the side glass, you can do whatever you want on the back. If the guy is nice he can give you up to 3% variance from 20%

Since it is a state law, vehicle window tint in Texas is the same for the whole state and does not vary by region or city.
The rear glass is totally unregulated as to darkness only if the vehicle has outside mirrors on both sides of the vehicle. Since all Corvettes (and most other vehicles too) have them, then legally you could paint the rear window with black paint if you chose to.
I think the 20% number others have stated here may be the legal limit for pass/driver front windows (remember, this is a state law that covers all vehicles, not just Corvettes) but I would have to check since it's been awhile since I read the statute on this.
The front window (windshield) may be tinted or covered no lower than the "AS1" line, etched in the glass and visible on the pass. side close to the frame. This is usually the same distance down that the factory tint covers. I think there may be a max distance down from the top center of the windshield as well but, here again I'd have to look it up. Most people (me included) don't want any thing on the windshield anyway.
I think the experience that most other guys here have had with law enforcement is pretty common. In other words, no problems. Mainly because it is a difficult thing to prove up in court. The officer cannot testify that it "looks" illegal. He has to prove it, beyond a reasonable doubt. So for the most part, the majority of them don't enforce it.
I went with the 20% all around. It really makes a difference in the summer months. HTH

BTW, to the best of my knowledge, window tint is not an item of inspection during the annual vehicle safety inspection.

Re: ----Texas guys with window tint---- (ZF Six)
Sounds like a bunch of jail house lawyers :) No flame intended :blueangel: The Texas Transportation Code (TRC) is the Texas State law that deals with window tint on 1988 and later model vehicles. (Stay with me here) Vehicles made prior to 1988 are regulated by TX DPS administrative rules for vehicle inspection. For doubters go to the TX DPS website and look it up. Anyhow there has been State court ruling that effectively negates the administrative rule for window tint on vehicles made prior to 1988. (The hangup here is that not all police agencies have heard of the ruling and most JPs and muni-court judges are unaware of it or choose to ignore it. Basically the court ruled the way it did because of the language of the TRC law. It might take awhile to explain and I'm not a typist.
Basically the TRC law says this: It the same for all of Texas
35% of the light must be able to pass through all side windows (Remember car windows already have a slight tint to them and applying 35% window tint will give you tinting somewhere just about 25%)
The rear window can be as dark as you can get it IF you have TWO OUTSIDE rear view mirrors.
Window tinting can not be lower than the AS1 line on the front window and not more than 5 inches below the top of the windshield. If there is no AS1 line no more than 5 inches below the top of the windshield.
The reason most of you have gotten by with 20% tint is that most police agencies follow the Highway Patrol tolerance policy of not giving tickets unless it is below 20%. WARNING Driver with attitude or cop with attitude can legally give a ticket for anything below 35%. Most traffic cops do have a meter to measure window tint and it is easy to prove in court.
Soooo in a nut shell.........if your window tint is just above 20% and you don't give the local law an attitude.....you will most likely get by.

I've only stopped one vehicle which had limo tint all the way around..the guy showed me his Private investigator stuff he had and said he understood the law about window tint and said he had been given a ticket several times and just paid them, think he said he had paid like $90....I believed what he was telling me and told him to have a nice day.... :yesnod:

Re: ----Texas guys with window tint---- (2001 Red Coupe Bandit)

The reason I want to go so dark. The heat here in Houston during the summer is nuts!
oh and it looks good! ;)
