Default The Other Quick Videos

This is a quick check of the #1 exhaust valve. It's a little tough to see in the video but the indicator positioned in-line with the rocker movement so I would think that should show the most wear. With the valve lowered off the seat ~.25", I get 0.004-0.005" movement.

Couple of questions...
1. Am I doing this right? Will this method give me numbers I can use to gauge the wear?

2. How's the 0.004-0.005" movement?

If it looks like I'm doing this right, I'll go though and check the others (even though this is a PITA). FYI, this is a 2006 Z06 with 35k miles and no engine mods or aftermarket tune that I am aware of although, I have only had the car the last 20k miles of its life.

Thanks!

[quote=HorsePowerAddicts;1583786749]Took a quick video of the "wiggle test" on a set of heads we pulled off an 06 Z06 with 40K miles.

Just figured i would share it with the forum.

We have great deals on rebuiding LS7 heads and heads and cam packages if you are interested in fixing the LS7 valvetrain issues.

[quote=DOUG @ ECS;1583680135]We have been replacing so many LS7 heads lately here that we decided to put a video together of what the damage actually looks like for you guys to see first hand who do not do this stuff regularly.

It seems that almost every LS7 coming in here with 20k or more on the odometer (06-07 especially) has excessive wear and often the owner does not know it. The cars are getting dropped off for a supercharger or cam etc, but we have to start with repairing the heads first. To the point that we have a half dozen rotating LS7 heads in the works at all times now to shorten the wait for the customers.

It has come to the point where we can tell just by listening to the car, if you hold the RPM up to roughly 2k you can hear the play in the drive train. A handful of the owners just thought it's how the engine sounds since they bought the car second hand and are amazed how much quieter it is after repairing the cylinder heads. I do not have a video of that sorry, but here is a video of what the wear looks like itself.

These are all the other videos I have posted over the past year or so. Please take no offense if I sound mad in some of these videos. At the time I was.

Look at these videos and make up you mind. I take this very seriously.
Like the thread title says, some of us thought it a good idea to get a feel for how many on this forum have changed from the OEM hollow stemmed exhaust valves, over to a solid stainless exhaust valve.

Here's what it looks like so far:

Count is 417 C6 Z06 owning CorvetteForum members who have previously switched to, currently have builds or builds in progress which will be running, or have experience in their LS7s with running, "heavier" than stock exhaust valves and "upsetting" stock valve train dynamics and "slaughtering" their redlines. Be they doing it with Inconel or Ferrea Super Alloy, Ferrea's new partly drilled exhaust valve, or Solid stemmed stainless steel, in stock or aftermarket castings.

*******This thread as it is set up, is intended to be informative. So to that end the names are hyperlinked to prior posts describing key elements of the owner's build, to include, but not limited to, the cylinder heads in the car, and components used within them, ancillary modifications, and in most cases, which professionals were involved in the builds.

The listing is broken down alphabetically, numerically, and geographically.

The listing is a "Global" listing, in that it includes cars from parts of the world outside of the United States. The CorvetteForum, is the largest Corvette Centric forum of it's type.

This fact should give the reader an indication as to the extent the use of this technique goes in the management of the LS7 stock valve drop issue.

Owners and those interested in this topic, may study the listings and the wide range of information contained within the hyperlinks and using it, make what they deem to be the appropriate professional inquiries with regard to this matter.

This method might save the viewer the trouble of wading through the BS and distractions, which typically come from those who agree with GM's selection of the stock, thin walled, hollow stemmed factory LS7 valves, despite several cases in here documenting their failure. Indeed, had you not heard of the failures of the stock LS7 valves, well you probably would not be in here.

At any rate, the following listing is set up for your perusal. Use it to your advantage. As you study it and absorb the information, speak with professionals who have familiarity and actual practical experience with this technique, the use of non sodium filled SS exhaust valves in the LS7.

Good luck, and enjoy your perusal of the listing which we who have taken the steps to avoid a windowed engine block due to a failed stock LS7 valve, fondly refer to as "The Registry".

We will post up the bore/mic measurement clearances for the guides in question sometime later this evening.

Customer has had the vehicle around 10,000 miles (before pulling the heads). When he purchased the vehicle it was known that the heads were redone 5k miles before the purchase/sale of said vehicle. Customer said it had a very mild cam. We asked for additional information regarding the camshaft specs/ect... Customer was unable to provide them, he just told us it was "mild". He has only driven the car on the street with no track days. He was told by the previous owner that the vehicle was a street only car but we all know how that goes(5k unknown, 10k street).
