Default unhappy 66 hardtop headliner

I bought a headliner from Al Knock last summer to replace the original sagging vinyl, and it arrived crammed into a cardboard box without any packing material. the vinyl was wrinkled and never fully recovered from the bending. Since it had a rigid plastic liner, I figured it would be fine after a while but that was a wrong assumption.

After installation and then hanging the hardtop from my conditioned garage ceiling for about 6 months, this morning I dropped the hardtop on the car and discovered a half inch sag in the liner and backing. When first installed, the liner was tight to the top, so gravity obviously took its toll.

Is this to be expected from supposedly the highest quality manufacturer of Corvette interior products? Has anyone had this happen and try redoing the process with adhesive? The liner was rigid enough that I did not use any adhesive at all and it never got warmer than 90 degrees. Since 3M 80 did not hold the original flimsy vinyl liner, I can't imagine it would hold a semi-rigid plastic backer.

Why?, didn't you contact them when you first noticed the "sag/wrinkle"...and then wait '6 months' to complain on the Forum...

They would have made good on it...

And you should have used adhesive to glue the liner to the hardtop so it wouldn't sag. That's how I did mine and it worked great and no sags.

I contacted them immediately about the poor packing and wrinkled vinyl. The woman said she would notify the owner but it wasn't bad enough to bother with. They never got back to me. Not complaining; just wondering if this is a common problem. It seems I now must disassemble and try to glue the thing back up... some day. It's a heck of a lot better than what I started with!

Knoch will be at the NCRS Winter Regional in Lakeland this week. I would call Knoch first thing Monday and see what they have to say. They'll be doing installations at Lakeland and they may be willing to reinstall the headliner for you. Al's usually pretty good about standing behind his products.

I have to say I'm surprised that they would send a headliner "crammed" into a box, but it probably had something to do with UPS dimensional weight charges. Corvette America ships their headliners in boxes properly sized to fit a headliner, so they're not crammed in. Though I don't recall Corvette America using any packing material with their headliners either.
