What tire size for a 17 x 9.5 rim?
I just purchased a set of ZR 1 style 17 x 9.5 rims. What is the best tire size for an 87 vert? I have seen 275/40 17 and 255/45 17 tires recommended. I am thinking about getting a set of Falkon Ziex ZE 415 tires. Anyone famailiar with these tires?
Thanks

This may help. Most important thing is to keep the Diameter close to what your original diameter was so your speedo will still be accurate. If the original size was 255/50-16 with a Diameter of 26 inches then look at the list below and you'll see that a 285/40-17 or a 255/45-17 would be ideal. However that 255 will be almost to narrow on a 9.5 inch rim. I would go with either 275 or 285 width tire. The 275 would give you a lower profile tire with a sidwall height of 4.3 inches and even though its a little smaller than 26 inches in diameter, it's not enough to really make a big difference on your speedo.
You can go to the following site to play with other diameters. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
I don't know much about the Falkons, but I can recommend the Kumho MX or the Kumho Supra 712s. Both good tires in dry and wet.
Hope this helps.

Either the 275/40-17 or the 285/40 tire will be the best bet. They have very close to the same dimensions as the original 255/50-16 tires that came on the car. And I would gowith the same size tires at all four corners so you can rotate the tires for longer tread life.
Both of these sizes are available from a wide variety of manufacturers.
Your driving habits should have a lot to do with tire selection. Do you pudh the car hard and drive on normally dry pavement? Look at the Kuhmo Escta MX. If you want good dry and wet traction and a great value for the money, look at the Kuhmo Supra 712.
Don't know a lot about the Falkons either but I do run the MX for street, autocross and track days. Great tire for the money as it has close to the perormance level of the Goodrich KD's at much less cost.
Go to the Tire Rack website and use their selector by plugging in the 275/40-17 size and then select the Ultra high performance category to see what's there and get costs. There are some good reviews of the tires and a very good rating system to compare the tires in terms of wear and traction on different surface conditions.

Thanks for the posts. I decided to go with the 275/40 17 tires. I purchased them from Discount Tires because there isn't a Tire Rack in my area. Here is a link to what the Falken tires look like:
http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...65&rd=17&ar=40
I originally went to a local Discount Tire store and they quoted me
$ 684.00 for the tires, valve stems, mount, free flat repairs, lifetime rotation and balancing. I decided to go to their website
(www.tires.com) to see if I could get a better deal. I guy on the phone first quoted me $ 584.00 delivered then lowered the price to $ 554.00, delivered.
He said that any Discount Tire store would mount them for free and only charge $ 12.00 per wheel for balancing. I called the local store back and told them that I was planning on purchasing the tires online and they matched the online price.
For $ 600.00 I got the tires mounted, free flat repairs, lifetime rotation and balancing.
