There is more difference in tread width amongst tire brands of the same size than the little 1 cm difference between 275 and 285. For example, the C5 front Firestone run-flats are 1.8 inches narrower than the Goodyear EMTs and many people are buying the Firestones anyway. 1.8 inches is about 46 mm so your asking about only 10 mm difference. I say it is not enough to notice unless side by side.

They look just a little wider, but of course this will depend on tread as well.

With the 275 the rim was exposed to curbs. With the 285 they now have some protection.
