2015 Opinions: Autocross Tires (Best to Worst)Be
I know... it has been beaten to death. But let's get some NEW opinions (for 2015) on Autocross Tires.
Of course, there are different ways that people use them...
some people trailer their cars or wheels and tires, then use these tires exclusively for autocross.
Other people drive their car to the event, autocross it, then drive back home... all on the same tires (Arrive and Drive).
So I propose we provide for these 2 "groups"... "track", and "compromise".
I am now in the "compromise" group with my C7 Z51. Although I have been in the "track" group also (been doing this stuff since 1980).
Here are a bunch of various Brands/Models. Let's see what people think.
We might even be able to create some sort of spread sheet.
This is taken from TireRack info.
By all means, add any other brands/models you think are worthy.
I don't see any Nittos listed, yet I know some people like them.

Michelin PSS ZP - Stock size 2008 C6 Z51 -
"Hydroplaning Resistance" 9 (drove so fast in the wet, 50mph+, something under the hood got wet, that did not like it, horn decided to come on and stay on)
"Wet Traction" 9
"Cornering Stability" 8
"Dry Traction" 8
"Steering Response" 9
"Ride Comfort" 9
"Noise Comfort" 9
"Would you buy again" 10
Perhaps add "Communication" to the list? How well the tires let you know what they're doing/about to do?

Well here's the big "IT DEPENDS"
The R888 is a nonstarter for SCCA. Too good for a street tire class, not good enough for SP and higher, so it's irrelevant to anyone autocrossing with SCCA rules, along with pretty much the entire "streetable" list, and anything that isn't a Hoosier A6 or A7.
Hooray for no Nittos!!!!
My favorite street tire of the list is the RS3. IF ONLY it came it big 18" sizes. As it stands, the Rival is really the only one that comes in big sizes, so it takes my #1 spot for the 200TW and higher set.
Hoosier A:
"Hydroplaning Resistance"- irrelevant
"Wet Traction"- irrelevant
"Cornering Stability"- 10
"Dry Traction"- 10
"Steering Response" - IMO the R1S feels better on turn in. But it's slower for me, so...irrelevant.
"Ride Comfort" - irrelevant
"Noise Comfort" - irrelevant
"Would you buy again" - 10
Rival:
"Hydroplaning Resistance" - Bad
"Wet Traction" - ok if wet, pretty bad if puddles
"Cornering Stability" - For a street tire, 9
"Dry Traction" - For a street tire, 9
"Steering Response" - 8
"Ride Comfort" - 6
"Noise Comfort" - 5
"Would you buy again" - 10

For instance, Bridgestone is releasing a new tire, RE-71. They mentioned it at thier annual dealer meeting this past week in Vegas, but the specs are not out, and for sure nobody has driven on one. Might be a game changer, might not.
At this point, all this thread can do is rehash last year's news. Come back in a month.

Best 200-treadwear autocross tire for use in autocross:
ZII Star Spec
R-S3 (Version 2)
(Tie)
The reason is because of how fast they warm-up.
Best 200-treadwear autocross tire for use in cool weather:
R1R
Best R-comp autocross tire with an aggressive nature:
A6
With honorable mention to a new R1 S
Best R-comp tire with a mild nature:
R888
Best +/- 200-treadwear autocross tire for track use:
AD08 R
And a tie with the Rival if it isn't being closed out.
Best +/- 200-treadwear autocross tire for street use:
RE-11A
Ecsta Xs
Pilot Sport Cup 2
(Tie)
Also, the ZII Star Spec is popular on the street but not available in Corvette sizes

Most of the manufacturers have not released this year's tires yet. What was true last year is not true this year and there as yet too many unkowns about this year. You're premature.

The RE-71 started showing up at folks' homes over the weekend so there should be initial feedback as early as next weekend... but there's not much in the way of "wide" sizes being offered so it may be a compromise sorta tire (compound vs. width).
The Rival is mostly out of stock with the Rival-S due on the market by the end of April. Granted, it's anyone's guess which sizes will be introduced initially as well as when the regular Rival will be back out in the full range of sizes.
I'm on Z2 SS's right now and they're plenty good but I won't be surprised if something better/faster is available later this year.
The RS3v2 is in short supply right now and with the new stuff coming out who knows how competitive it'll be.
