2018 Corvette ZR1 Convertible Test Mule Spotted in the Wild

ZR1 convertible has just been seen in its natural habitat: the gas station.

There are two things we’re really looking forward to here at Corvette Forum. First, the widely rumored mid-engine Corvette C8. And second, the much-ballyhooed upcoming ZR1. Two silhouettes will accompany the ZR1 nameplate when it debuts in the following months. And now, a convertible version has just been spotted in the wild.

Filling up at a gas station in Michigan, this quick Instagram post shows a production-ready convertible version of the ultimate C7 Corvette. Judging by the sound, it seems to have the A8 automatic transmission.

Now, enthusiasts may cry foul at the fact there’s an open-top version of the ZR1, but if it works, and people buy it, we can’t complain. After all, Bowling Green has to keep the electrical bill paid. We also know that with advancements in chassis technology and materials, the rigidity of the ZR1 convertible might not suffer too much of a compromise.

With body curves relatively easy to pick out under the camo, you can see a massive front splitter, and what looks like a multi-piece hood. This could be where the rumored LT5 would reside. And it points back at the clear hood section made famous by the C6 ZR1. What’s yet to be known is if the Corvette’s hood will open with or without that section.
