2023 Corvette Z06 Hangs With Lamborghini Huracán, McLaren 765LT in Comparison Test
For half or even one-third of the price, the 2023 Corvette Z06 once again punches far above its weight class.
Even prior to its debut, everyone was dreaming about pitting the all-new 2023 Corvette Z06 against its exotic rivals from the likes of Ferrari, McLaren, and Lamborghini. But after we learned everything there is to know about the C8 Z06, we were even more excited to see how the most powerful naturally-aspirated V8 production car in history stacked up against its pricier foes, mostly because we knew what the answer would be – pretty darn well. Now, we’re finally seeing those sorts of comparisons happen, and this one from MotorTrend is certainly intriguing, as it pits the 2023 Corvette Z06 against the McLaren 765LT Spider and Lamborghini Huracan LP 640-2 Tecnica.
This is quite the trio of modern sports cars, starting with the 2023 Corvette Z06, which needs no introduction at this point – particularly to Corvette fans. Regardless, in case you forgot, the new Z06 is powered by GM’s 5.5-liter LT6 engine, which generates 670 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, which drives the rear wheels and moves a somewhat hefty 3,686 pounds with ease.
Then there’s the Lamborghini Huracán LP 640-2 Tecnica, which features a classic naturally-aspirated 5.2-liter V10 powerplant generating 631 horsepower and 417 pound-feet of torque while tipping the scales at a svelte 3,470 pounds in spite of its power disadvantage. In any event, it and the Corvette Z06 must do battle with the McLaren 765LT Spider, which uses its twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 to make a whopping 755 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, coupled with a curb weight of just 3,223 pounds.
Judging by the numbers, one would expect the 765LT to be the superior performer here, and that’s mostly correct. The Corvette and Lamborghini do 0-60 in 2.8 seconds each, while the McLaren lags slightly behind at 2.9 seconds. However, the 765LT passes both by the time the quarter-mile is over, recording a run of 10.3 seconds at 142.6 mph versus the Z06’s 10.8 second run at 128.2 mph and the Huracan’s 10.6 second pass at 134.5 mph.
That’s slightly disappointing for the C8 Z06, but of course, we must consider price. In that category, the new Z06 dominates with an as-tested price tag of $164,805 versus the Huracan at $332,095 and the 765LT at $490,810. Heck, you can buy two or three versions of the ultimate Corvette (for now, at least) for the price of one of these other exotics, and that’s really saying something considering how close each is in terms of performance.
Of course, performance isn’t everything (we guess?), and in that case, it’s worth taking a dive into what MT thinks after spending time in each. As far as drivability goes, the rag notes “there’s only one car here that sane adults would contemplate driving for more than an hour, and that’s the Corvette.” However, it finished second to the McLaren in this comparison test thanks to the fact that “its mesospheric performance limits and the ease with which we mere mortals were able to probe them.” The only things that MT doesn’t like about the Z06 are its “wooden brake feel,” busy styling, and portly curb weight, but for such a massive price savings, we can certainly live with that.
