It’s been said that you can’t always judge a book by its cover, and over the years I’ve come to learn why that applies to Corvettes as well.

For example, take this rare 1978 C3, which is scheduled to be auctioned off at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale between January 10 and 18.

At first glance you might be inclined to write the Corvette off as just some wild experimental design concept. But if you don’t look beneath the cover, you miss knowing that it’s packed with 880-horsepower and capable of going from 0 to 96 km/h in 2.5 seconds.

The turbine-powered ‘Vette was developed by the Granatalli family and also features new gauges across the instrument panel and dashboard as well as high-performance NASCAR brakes. God knows you’ll need ’em in this rocket ship.
