C8 Corvette Wrecks at Tail of the Dragon After Miata Loses Control

C8 Corvette Mazda MX-5 Miata Crash Tail of the Dragon

During a nice enjoyable fall cruise around “The Dragon,” this C8 had one unfortunate run-in with a ragged MX-5.

It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that we’ve seen several C8 Corvettes wrecked since the all-new model started landing in private hands. After all, if there’s one thing people are good at, it’s crashing sports cars. But the latest C8 wreck we’ve come across, recently documented by Corvette Forum member gilbybarr in the forums, wasn’t the Corvette driver’s fault. Rather, while enjoying the famous Tail of the Dragon, he was run into by a rogue Mazda MX-5 Miata.

“Regularly, there are threads here on the forum about driving ‘The Dragon’ here in the Knoxville area. While it can be invigorating, it unfortunately can also be dangerous, even if you are being careful. The photos below depict an accident recently on the Dragon when a C8 was struck by an older Miata whose driver allegedly failed to control his vehicle in the turns. Be careful out there!”

As most already know, the Tail of the Dragon is one of the best, and also one of the most popular, driving roads in the United States. It can also be rather challenging and unforgiving, which means that quite a few people, often more inexperienced drivers, simply push their cars too hard and wind up like these two.

No more details on the crash were provided, but it’s pretty clear that one of the cars, presumably the Miata, crossed the center line and sideswiped the other in a turn. Both vehicles have extensive driver’s side damage, but the Corvette got the worst of it. Sitting backwards in the ditch, the C8 has had its left rear wheel and part of the suspension ripped off. The Miata, meanwhile, looked like a wreck before it smashed into the Corvette, and now looks even worse.

The photos do tell some of the story of the aftermath. We can see an older gentleman, presumably the Corvette owner, looking quite displeased with the younger man, who we assume is the Miata driver. But who can blame him? Hopefully, the C8 owner had his Performance Data Recorder running, so perhaps he has some sort of documentation regarding who is at fault here.

On the bright side, at least no one seems to be seriously injured here. But at the same time, let this serve as an important reminder – no matter how careful or skilled a driver you might be, there’s always someone out there who isn’t.
