Do You Change the Oil in Your Corvette or Let Someone Else Do It?

Corvette Oil Change

While some prefer to do all the maintenance on their Corvette, others are content to let the dealer handle it.

In the old days, every gearhead worth their salt did the majority of their own maintenance. This includes the oil change, something so simple that anybody can do it. But these days, getting your oil changed at a dealership or third party establishment is cheap. So cheap that you oftentimes don’t even save any money by doing it yourself. But then again, do you really trust another person to change the oil in your Corvette? That was a question posed by Corvette Forum member Red08 recently, and it elicited some interesting responses.

“How many of you change your own oil/filter? I do. I enjoy doing stuff like this. I’ve been changing the oil and filter in my own cars for nearly 50 years. And I enjoy looking everything over underneath the car.”

Unsurprisingly, most members that chime in prefer to service their Corvette themselves.

“I’ve been doing oil and filter changes on most of my vehicles for 50 years as well,” said ShadowGray19. “But it’s getting harder and harder due to age and medical issues. The wet sump C7 1LT is a very easy job, however.”

“I have a pit in my shop that makes it easy,” added bjones7131. “I don’t trust the dealer, though I did get the three free oil changes. But I watched them like a hawk.”

“I do all the basic maintenance work on my vehicles if possible,” said Mako72. “Oil changes, tire rotation, fluid changes, filters etc. So far none of my late model vehicles have ever been back to the dealers since purchase. But I will admit it’s getting harder as I get older.”

Then again, there are also quite a few people that don’t bother. Mostly because they don’t see the value in servicing their own Corvette.

“Never gave it a thought,” said dvilin. “Much more enjoyable to have a coffee and donut while letting my trusted dealer do the job. Plus, they sponsor our Corvette Club and we get one free oil change per year.”

“I’m glad many enjoy that type of work,” added dave 2012 tt. “Me – no thanks. I think it is important we understand how our Corvette works (this forum is great for this) so we can help make sure the job is done right. For example, know how to check the oil to make sure it was done correctly, etc.”

“My local Chevy dealer charges me customer rates and I get the job done for $45 + tax,” said My Vette Betty. “They also check out what’s going on underneath. I grew out of lying on my back on the cold concrete many years ago when l got a job that paid me good money!”

So far, the responses in this thread have been pretty even on both sides of the fence. So we want to hear how you handle oil changes in your own Corvette. Head over here and let us know if you’re a lifelong DIYer, or if you’d rather just pay someone else to do the dirty work!
