GM separates Corvette from Chevy in an effort to move brand upscale, with additional models a real possibility.

In recent history, a number of car models have split off to become their own brand. That includes the likes of Ram and Genesis, and even Jetta in China. So we weren’t really surprised when we heard rumors last summer that GM might follow suit with its beloved Corvette. But now, it appears that there is most certainly fire where there was smoke, as GM has now exclusively confirmed to Corvette Forum that Corvette is indeed splitting off from Chevrolet to become its very own brand.

This is not a terribly surprising move for a number of reasons. For starters, car sales, in general, are in the gutter, forcing automakers like Chevy to axe most of their non-SUV models. That doesn’t apply to the Corvette, however, as the C8 enjoyed incredible interest from the start and sold out pretty quickly for the 2020 model year.

Plus, now that the Corvette has moved up to the world of mid-engine sports cars/exotics, it deserves its own showroom. Higher-end buyers don’t want to have to navigate rows of boring crossovers to look at the new and exciting Corvette. Nor sip on some generic coffee while they get their prized machine serviced.

Dedicated Corvette dealerships promise to offer an experience that’s a step above what you’ll find at a regular Chevy lot. Details as of now are scant, but GM did say that buyers will enjoy a much more luxurious experience, complete with designer lobbies. And, we’d like to think, some delicious pastries or German licorice to munch on while our ‘Vettes are being serviced.

All of this is a nice thought. But one big question looms even larger now that GM is making Corvette its own brand. Will we see additional models, particularly the long-rumored SUV? The automaker stopped short of confirming any of this. But given the way profitable performance SUVs like the Lamborghini Urus are selling these days, our GM insider says a Corvette SUV is a likelihood.

Unless, of course, none of this is true. Because it isn’t. It’s just another elaborate April Fool’s Day joke, and we hope that you got a good chuckle from it. Instead of, well, a blood pressure spike. So far as we know, Corvette isn’t going anywhere, and will be a Chevy as long as it lives!
