What Happens When You Take A ZR-1 to the Autobahn?
Sadly, not every Corvette owner will get a chance to race on a ‘limitless’ highway!
For most American Corvette owners, the idea of testing the full limits of your vehicle is nothing but a dream. You’ll get the odd chance to race down a straight piece of road, obviously ignoring posted speed-limits and praying no cop is around. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you will actually get the chance to put your Corvette on a track to really open it up. Other than that, you’re stuck Sunday driving or getting upwards of 90 mph on a highway. If you have a Corvette in Germany, that’s a whole different story.
For American Bill Farmer, he truly got to test the limits on his 1995 Corvette ZR-1 (#007 of 448, if you keep track of that sort of thing) while stationed in Germany during his time in the Air Force. In a video from VINwiki, Bill takes time out to tell a few stories from his life about going fast. The most fascinating story is about his time on the Autobahn with his ZR-1.
As Bill tells it, the story starts on a cool November day, where he is joyriding on the Autobahn, attempting his normal routine. “I always try to do one donut, try to drive through the curves, and try to break 160,” Bill says.
That’s when a new Porsche 911 gets on the road. As you do when you’re driving a fast car and another fast car joins, they try to outdrive each other. Bill describes being about three car-lengths behind, but keeping pace, when he notices he’s doing 172 mph. He continues, “He was not pulling away from me, we were just on it!”
After some more driving, both drivers end up pulling off the highway to chat. That’s when the German driver looks at Bill and is shocked at how well the Corvette performed. The German driver then complains how he just bought the Porsche and expected it to easily outperform the Corvette. But as many readers on this site know quite well, you can never underestimate a Corvette.
The video continues with a funny story about taking an older lady on the Autobahn and almost having a horrible accident. It doesn’t sound funny by that description, but you should check it out yourself, as it is pretty amusing.
One thing is for sure: After watching this video and hearing Bill’s stories, every Corvette owner should get a chance to race on the Autobahn. It sounds like a blast!
