Hendrick City Chevrolet Hit by Thieves, Who Stole Four Cars Including a C8
Charlotte, North Carolina-based Hendrick City Chevrolet took a hit recently as a group of organized thieves made off with multiple cars.
Though automotive theft has always been a fairly common crime, things have only gotten worse over the past couple of years, for a variety of reasons. This boom in car theft isn’t just limited to individuals that leave their vehicles running or with the keys inside either, as criminals are targeting dealers, too – some during test drives, others taking cars straight off the lot in the middle of the night. And that’s precisely what happened at Hendrick City Chevrolet in Charlotte, North Carolina recently, according to WBTV News.
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department noted that those thieves entered the dealership around midnight and proceeded to make off with a grand total of four vehicles after securing their key fobs – a 2020 Corvette, 2021 Dodge Challenger, 2021 Chevy Tahoe, and a 2020 Jeep Compass Trailhawk. The whole thing went down in just around eight minutes, with the thieves moving quickly to evade detection and capture. Needless to say, it worked – for now, at least.
“Once they located those key fobs, they actually came outside the business and took the vehicles,” said Detective Rick Smith, CMPD Crime Stoppers coordinator. “We can’t definitively say how organized they are, but we would like to get these individuals identified and get them into custody. They’re going to drive them around as long as they can. They may be even trying to sell some of the cars or some of the parts.”
Luckily, this criminal act was captured by security cameras at Hendrick City Chevrolet, which helps provide some clues as to what to look for. The thieves didn’t even bother to cover their faces, so perhaps someone will recognize them and call CMPD to try and claim the $10,000 reward that’s being offered. But while one might assume that this could have been an inside job, police dismissed that notion, but did note that those involved probably had knowledge of where the key fobs were located, as seems clear by how quickly they were able to locate them. Regardless, with any luck, someone will recognize these thieves and help bring them to justice.
