There may be some confusion about how many Corvettes with 36-gallon fuel tanks were built back in the ‘60s, but there’s certainly no question about how valued these cars are to auctioneers now.

I have to admit, I’ve always been partial to any story about a U.S. veteran’s love for his or her American automobile. To me, these two things represent a lot of the stuff that makes America great. Over the years, I’ve come across some pretty emotional stories about veterans and their cars, but the one I stumbled on of a former Marine staff sergeant named Mike Kimmons probably tops the list.

The 1964 Corvette Sting Ray (oftentimes named as “Stingray,” although this elided name refers to a later model of the same vehicle) was part of the C2 group of Corvettes by the Chevrolet manufacturing company.
