In-Ear Binaural Microphone Makes You Crave the C7 Grand Sport Experience Even More

Haven’t had a chance to drive the new Corvette C7 Grand Sport yet?

Well, you might find the Winding Road Magazine video above to be a good mental placeholder. At least until you’ve had a chance to take the wheel yourself.

The roughly 11-minute clip utilizes an in-ear binaural microphone recording. It literally makes it sound as if you’re right there in the passenger’s seat. As a matter of fact, it’s probably one of the best cockpit videos we’ve come across featuring the Grand Sport. We’re particularly impressed with the way it captures the sound of the car’s 6.2L LT1 V8 as it rumbles through the canyons.

We dug a little deeper into the mechanics of an in-ear binaural microphone. And it certainly makes sense that the in-car experience would have a more realistic effect.

According to The Verge, the ear-plug system is designed to mimic the way we hear sound in our heads. In-ear binaural microphones essentially build on stereo sound. But with the addition of two more sensitive microphones to help pick up distinctive sounds.

So, in essence, when set up to record from inside the C7 Corvette Grand Sport, whatever the driver hears, is what you hear.

This particular Grand Sport test car is equipped with Chevy’s 7-speed manual transmission. It certainly enhances the visual effect of the video, watching the driver shifting in and out of turns.

That said, we still haven’t come across a video that truly captures all of the emotions one feels when driving the new Grand Sport. Then again, the Corvette is always better experienced live and in person, regardless of how well it’s depicted in a YouTube clip.
