Car and Driver is reporting that a pre-production C8 was found sitting on cinder blocks in Detroit after its wheels were stolen.

It takes some bravery to yank the rims off of any car, but even more so an attention-drawing car like a C8 Corvette. Yet, according to Car and Driver, that’s exactly what happened in Detroit. This black-on-black C8 seems to be the first victim of wheel theft that we know of with a C8. The circumstances of which leave us upset and a bit baffled.

Typically, wheel thieves target common cars, so their stolen goods don’t stand out. Also, common cars tend to have a higher ground clearance for quick jacking action. Perhaps this C8 was targeted specifically for being a Corvette? If that’s the case, this theft might backfire on the perps.

If the thieves’ tactic is to flip the wheels for a quick sale, these thieves might end up being their own worst enemy. As it stands, the C8 Corvette isn’t technically on sale yet. If the thieves post up the wheels on local classifieds they’ll essentially be turning themselves in.

Worse yet, the pain of this action reaches far beyond just seeing a car without wheels. Thieves simply don’t care about damage caused during the theft. Jacking points? Who cares, as long as the car lifts up. After the wheels came off, we can’t imagine they were gentle when resting it on concrete blocks. Heck, they didn’t even bother dealing with the lug nuts, according to MotorTrend. And then, they let the back end of the car rest on the ground too.

2020 Corvettes and law enforcement have been making headlines lately, but we do have to wonder what GM was doing with this one in Detroit. Winter isn’t much of an environment for a Corvette. So what could have prevented this? Wheel locks? Maybe. But it’s also quite odd that a C8 wouldn’t have a tilt alarm. We know that GM has OnStar connectivity that would send someone’s smartphone a notice if the car detects it is being jacked. Hopefully, we’ll get answers soon.
