C7- Dexos1 or Mobil 1 Engine Oil?
Tadge,
The factory fill of the C7 is Dexos1 (see engine oil cap). In Service Information the recommended engine oil is specified as: Use only engine oil licensed to the Dexos1 specification; ACDelco dexos1 Synthetic Blend is recommended. For track events use Mobil 1 engine oil.
On January 13, 2015, Chevrolet dealers received message # G_0000208346, which states: "As a reminder, dealers are required to use Mobil 1 when performing oil changes on ALL 2014-2015 Corvettes through the Chevrolet Complete Care Program."
Clearly you can see the confusion this has created for both the customer and the dealership. So Tadge, what is the engine oil YOU recommend for the C7 Corvette assuming the car is not used for track and competition use?
Thank you,
Nate Chandler

I agree very good topic as well. Not to blame the oil but my car had just had its 500 mile change a week before the engine blew. The dealer was admit that the car gets 5w30 dexos. I fussed with them about wanting the mobil 1 and they refused. Then a month later we get the post about GM has to if requested put in mobil 1. Im just not comfortable with a oil that is run in all the cobalts and stuff being in my high performance machine. May of or may not of been part of my problem with the blown engine. GM will never tell.
Good question though

To add more confusion, the Owners Manual states:
And goes further to state:
So, Corvette recommends Mobil 1 in Z51 (and Z06) and yet dealers have refused to use Mobil 1 even though doing so may result in damage not covered by the warranty.
To this day, many dealers are refusing to use Mobil 1 for oil changes unless the customer pays an upcharge which GM is now refunding.
Corvette recommends
Mobil 1® engine oils that meet the
requirements of the dexos1
specification for its dry sump
equipped engines.

Initially we up-charged customers to use Mobil 1 under the 2-year maintenance coverage, now we do not. We could not find any documents that specified to use Mobil 1 under this program. So we could only go by what Service Information and the owner's manual recommend.
I chuckled when I read Chevrolet's message to the dealers when it states "as a reminder...". As if the dealer was told before.

"Per GM document id#2948980, it reads as follows:
Use only engine oil licensed to the dexos1 specification of the proper SAE viscosity grade. ACDelco dexos1 synthetic blend is recommended. For track events or competitive driving, use Mobile 1 engine oil."

My dealer, Jeff Gordon Chevrolet in Wilmington, NC has been putting Valvoline in my Z51 C7. I sent them the service buletin showing that Mobil 1 is the only oil recommended and they sent me this back.

If they are changing the oil under the 2 year free maintenance program, then they are incorrect as GM requires Mobil 1 to be used.

They are all blends. You will not find a definition for full synthetic anywhere any longer. It is just a degree of what base stock they are blending, group 3, 4, or 5. I love Mobil 1, and Mobil pays my pension, but things have changed over the years.

Tadge has declared the option of pleading the 5th amendment right to not answer this question.
He will be pleading the 5th a lot. Because GM writes his paycheck. He will talk when the "suits" (lawyers and Bean counter accounts) tell him when to talk and what to answer.
Tadge is Charlie McCarthy Version 2.0. and the suits are Edgar Bergen.

If you are a paying customer and you did not specify what oil to use, then they are OK in using Valvoline as long as it meets Dexos1 specifications.

Even though any dexos blend is "OK," as it states on the oil cap, Mobil 1 helps to better protect your engine and make your investment last a lifetime! Or at least until the C8 arrives.....
If you want to make sure you get Mobil 1 in your Vette, get the oil cap that states Mobil 1

If it really matters to you, ask for the date of that bulletin compared to the one you gave them. Then call Chevy Customer support and ask them to contact the dealer. If they still refuse, tell them to use M1or you'll switch to another dealer. Then DO it.

That seems way over priced for Dexos?
Especially since GM just lowered all oil pricing as well at beginning of the month. I do not think we even charge that much for Mobil 1 oil change, and it is always more than Dexos

Subchev, Thank You for your response. I may need to consider doing my own oil changes and save some $$$. SAVE THE WAVE!
