An optional cooling pack for C7 (track use or other)
#21
On the track, the extra 150 HP is not an advantage.
When you find yourself on a track lapping in lock-step with a 400 HP Carrera S and an M3 (better drivers...stickier tires...more experience on a particular track) and your car is overheating, and they are not...
At that point it is hard to defend GM.
I was running 60 degrees hotter at performance levels BELOW what I could achieve tracking my last car with 330 HP.
Is the ultimate track Z06 a 500 HP NA C7 Grand Sport?

It is worth mentioning that many cars in this segment have much more conservative shut down temperatures. If we had an oil max shut down point of 280 degrees, it would be reached in a few laps in a Z06. On a 86 degree day the oil reaches 280 degrees in about three 2-mile laps. The cup 2 tires get up to temperature and start sticking to the road when the engine has already gotten the fluids too HOT for most cars in this segment.
Correspondingly, the oil properties degrade considerably. If the car doesn't shut down due to overtemp it has to cope with highly stressed oil and therefore a lower safety net.

Here is the problem with that logic. In the real world a well-driven C6 Z06 can turn laps just as quickly in the hands of the vast majority of drivers.

The new 911 turbo S did not overheat at the track, my friends gt500, boss302, my own boss 302, friends vipers, mclaren. none over heat.
If the car is built for 650hp, it should work with 650. No excuses.

I'm not making excuses for GM read my first post in this thread. My point was that comparing 300 hp cars to 650 horse cars is dumb.

Now that the 2016 changes have been detailed, all of you guys who wondered if GM
had a shred of integrity have your answer. Zero drive change changes. Not even the
easy and cheap changes like larger capacity coolers or a larger exit vent in the hood
for air flow. If a car has 650HP, it should be engineered to cool 700hp, no excuses.
The last car that I owned which I had to worry about overheating was a 1958
Ford Galaxy in the Chicago summers bumper to bumper traffic. I hated that car.
Now you know what Tadge thinks of your questions and feedback.
I guarantee that no Porsche, no Mercedes, no Audi, no Viper, will consistently
overheat when pushed to their max on the track. Quality cars don't overheat. period.
You get what you pay for never meant more than with the old GM and with the New
GM. Vote with your checkbook.

It's a two part process. If the thread gets enough activity it will be selected for a poll. While the poll is active (not active at this moment as we didn't get selected yet) folks vote on the most important of the topics chosen for the poll. Only after it passes both the selection for the poll as well as wins the most votes in the poll does it get sent to Tadge.

I have a 2011 ZR1 I have tracked many times. It overheated only once when I was dumb enough to have the AC on during a near-100 degree HPDE run. Other than that it has been rock solid with a bone stock setup. I have been thinking of moving to a Z06 but the overheating issue will affect that decision.

In my humble opinion an "optional cooling package" should not be required. Period.
In the middle of summer in California I have tracked stock : Nissan gtr, Ferrari 458, ford gt, Ford Mustang Shelby gt500 & mustang gt, Camaro ss, and corvette c6 z06.....no problem.
Per my prior comment, my c7 stingray holds up barely but my c7 z06 buddies see all sorts of overheating issues...

Cooling was the few misses on the Z06. Supercharged anything makes heat and someone at GM missed that memo. My Z07 oil temp got to 217 in normal street traffic at 45mph on a 75 degree NE day, are you kidding me! On the track I will not cook the oil for fear of engine failures 10 years from now when the warranty is long gone.
There will be some excellent water and oil cooling products coming out of the aftermarket world soon.
Is my car really at home here?

I think Tadge made is subtly clear in his most recent answer, that based upon the budget allowed for the C7 program at the time of initiation and beyond, that "track weapons" and "track packs" ended up outside of the budget. I feel like C7 is going to be a short generation...call me crazy.

"Ask Tadge" Producer
I honestly don't know what folks are expecting from this question. Assuming I put it up for vote and it wins, what do folks expect Tadge to say that he hasn't already with lawdogg's earlier question?
