Default Design Constraints - Tunnel-Mounted Shift Lever for Autos

Looking at the interior of the C7 - the presence of a physical, fore-aft "Drive Mode Selector" - the shift lever - seems a clunky, outmoded, kitschy design artifact which could be eliminated and replaced with another type of drive mode selector, creating any number of new opportunities for interior design - from a bare, featureless area, on up to a "Starfighter"-type switch-laden expanse.

With Chrysler's recent owner-operator issues (owners who can't tell if their car is in Drive or not, with resulting consequences)(and which still featured a lever) - would the GM design studio team think about considering, eliminating the central stalk, in favor of cleaner designs, for auto-equipped cars?

You don't get to prepend the subject of your question with [ASKED]. Only I do that IF it gets sent to Tadge.
